Alan Zheng each hit the 100-win milestone and helped the men's fencing team to a 4-0 record at the D'Arnstein '09 Invitational Saturday at Haverford.
Hopkins opened the day with a 25-2 win over Maryland. Freshmen
Alex Jeffords and
Larry Cai each went 3-0 to lead the Sabre squad to an 8-1 win. In the Foil, it was senior
Danny Comer, sophomore
Ethan Kim and freshman
Matthew Dao combining for a 9-0 win. Zheng and junior
Anthony Bae won three bouts each to lead the Foil squad to an 8-1 win.
Hopkins then beat William & Mary, 27-0. Cai, senior
David DeScherer and junior
Qilin Tong combined for a 9-0 win by the Sabre squad. Insler and freshman
Jorge Gana each went 3-0 to lead the Epee squad to a 9-0 win. Insler reached the 100-win mark with his second win of the round. And in the Foil, Bae, freshmen
Spencer Grossman Smisek and
Pranav Shibu combined for a 9-0 win.
The Blue Jays followed that with a 26-1 win over the Midshipmen of Navy. Cai and Jeffords again led the Sabre squad (8-1) with three wins each. Dao, Gana and Insler won three bouts apiece to lead the Epee squad to a 9-0 win. Zheng, Shibu and Grossman Smisek also went a combined 9-0 for the Foil squad. Zheng earned his 100
th win with his first round of the round.
JHU wrapped up the day with a 20-7 win over host Haverford. Cai, DeScherer and Jeffords won all nine of their bouts for the Sabre squad (9-0). Gana then led the Epee squad with three wins, including the deciding win, as the Jays won 5-4. And in the Foil, Zheng won all three of his bouts to lead the squad to a 6-3 win.
Hopkins (12-1) will return to action on Thursday, January 19 at the Philadelphia Invitational.
