Hopkins Sweeps Split Squad Matches at Muhlenberg, Mary Washington

• The Short Story: The 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team swept a pair of road matches Saturday, winning by 7-2 score at both 19th-ranked Mary Washington and Muhlenberg.
 
How it Happened • Mary Washington
• The Eagles jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles, but the Blue Jays answered by sweeping the singles to earn the win.
• Rishi Charan Shankar and Nick Spera took the first point of the match with an 8-6 win over freshman Marco Azar and graduate student Vishnu Joshi at second doubles. Junior Andrew Tran and senior Brian Wang then tied the match with an 8-7 (5) defeat of Cole Tecce and Peter Leese, ranked 14th in the region, at third. The top-ranked doubles team in the Atlantic South, Moses Hutchinson and Andrew Watson, edged sophomores Thomas Ardila and Thomas Yu, 8-7 (6) at first to put the Eagles up 2-1.
• Ardila started the come back with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Spera at fifth singles to knot the score at two. Tran then defeated Watson, 7-6 (2), 6-3 at third to put the Blue Jays on top. Azar followed with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Leese at sixth singles.
• In a battle of two of the top-five singles players in the region, it was Yu that came out on top. He beat Hutchison 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 at first to clinch the victory for Hopkins. Joshi earned a three-set win of his own as he defeated Shankar 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at second to make it 6-2 Blue Jays. Wang closed out the win with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) win at sixth over Tecce.
 
How it Happened • Muhlenberg
• Hopkins took a 2-1 lead after doubles and then won five of six singles matches to pick up its third conference win. In fact, the two losses came be default due to injury.
• The Mules took a point at third doubles by default. Junior Alex Kernagis and senior Ryan Hellinger then tied the match with an 8-0 win over Daniel Kantor and Isaac Shulman at first. Sophomore Nick Charanjiva and senior Eric Burrer then put the Jays on top with an 8-0 win over Josh Benson and Derek George at second.
• Muhlenberg tied the match at two with a default win at sixth singles. Hellinger again put Hopkins on top as he beat Benson 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. Charanjiva then won 6-0, 6-0 at second over Noah Katz to make it 4-2 Blue Jays.
• Kernagis clinched the win for Hopkins with a 6-1, 6-1 over Kantor at first. Burrer followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win over George at fourth and sophomore Karan Belday closed out the win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Shulman at fifth.
 
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 14-6 over Mary Washington and earns its first win in the series since 2018. It is Hopkins' seventh win over a ranked opponent this season.
• JHU also moves to 23-1 all-time against Muhlenberg and has won 17 straight over the Mules.
• Joshi moves into a tie for ninth in JHU history with his 52nd career singles win.
 
Up Next
• Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, April 26 as the Blue Jays host the Gettysburg Bullets. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 3:00 pm start at the JHU Tennis Courts.
