Hopkins Splits with Muhlenberg and Mary Washington

• The Short Story: The 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team split its matches Saturday, beating host Muhlenberg, 9-0, but falling at 14th-ranked Mary Washington, 8-1.
 
How it Happened • Muhlenberg
• Hopkins jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and then swept the singles to complete the shutout. Seniors Anya Gunewardena and Sophie Saland picked up the first point of the match with an 8-1 win over Malin Hermanson and Stefanie Wolff at second. Senior Jessica Liang and junior Celina Liu then beat Caroline Armknecht and Rose Glantz, 8-0, at first. Sophomore Hallie Gallo and junior Swati Yarlagadda wrapped up doubles with an 8-0 win over Jessica Rosen and Sophia Framm at third.
• Yarlagadda pushed Hopkins' lead to 4-0 with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win over Glantz at third singles. Liu followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Framm at second to clinch the win for the Blue Jays. Liang then beat Armknecht 6-1, 6-2 at first.
• Saland lost just one game in her win over Wolff at first and Hopkins led 6-0. Gallo was up 7-0 at sixth when Rosen retired. Gunewardena completed the shutout with a shutout of her own, beating Hermanson 6-0, 6-0.
 
How it Happened • Mary Washington
• The Eagles grabbed a 3-0 lead with a doubles sweep. Hanna Kimmey and Emily Beckner won 8-3 at third over junior Christina Huynh and freshman Catharina Ausfahl. Abby Moghtader and Lauren Quinn, ranked fourth in the Atlantic South beat junior Anjali Devireddy and freshman Ava Igaki-Meader at first. Claire Coleman and Amanda Hagino, ranked 12th in the region, won a tight 8-7 (5) decision over sophomore Ali Bader and junior Emily Javedan at second.
• Coleman, ranked eighth in the region, won her first set 6-3 before Igaki-Meader retired at second as the Eagles went up 4-0. Kimmey then clinched the win for UMW with a 6-1, 6-3 win over senior Amanda Ruci at fifth. Beckner then beat freshman Zoe Hsieh 6-3, 6-3 at sixth.
• Quinn followed with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Huynh at third to push Mary Washington's lead to 7-0. At first, Devireddy dropped a tough three-set match to Moghtader, ranked fourth in the region, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (3). Bader got Hopkins on the board when she beat Hagino 6-3, 6-3 at fourth singles to close out the match.
 
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 21-7 all-time against Muhlenberg and has won 15 straight in the series.
• The Blue Jays push their conference win streak to 137 matches.
• JHU falls to 11-12 all-time versus Mary Washington.
 
Up Next
• Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 27 at Dickinson. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
