LANCASTER, PA – Johns Hopkins freshman
Connor Powell has been named the Centennial Conference Wrestler of the Week it was announced today. Powell is the first Johns Hopkins wrestler this season to earn the award and the first Blue Jay to earn the award since
Dominick Reyes was honored almost exactly one year ago to the day (January 18, 2022).
Â
Powell posted a 4-0 record at the Virginia Duals last weekend. He picked up a win by fall, two wins by a decision and one forfeit as the Blue Jays placed eighth in the 12-team field.
Â
Powell, who wrestles at 149, opened his weekend effort with a second period pin (4:26) against
Zachary Ortega of Apprentice. His victory over Ortega jump-started Johns Hopkins' rally from an early 15-0 deficit as the Blue Jays went on to win 27-24.
Â
After winning by forfeit against Glenville St., Powell scored the biggest win of his young career against Averett as he topped seventh-ranked
Hai Siu, 3-2. He closed with a 2-0 win over Roanoke's
Andru Boyd.
Â
Powell improved to 16-6 on the year with his four victories last weekend. Among his 16 victories are eight bonus-point wins as he counts two major decisions, a team-high four technical falls and two pins to his credit.
Â
Powell and the Blue Jays will be back in action on Friday, January 20 when they welcome Ursinus to Goldfarb Gym for a Centennial Conference match (7 pm).
