Hartshorn Wins 400 IM at Thomas Murphy Invitational

BALTIMORE, MD – Sophomore Matthew Hartshorn won the 400 IM to lead the Johns Hopkins men's swim team on the second day of the Thomas Murphy Invitational. The Blue Jays sit in third place after two days with 1158 points.
 
Hopkins opened the night with a sixth-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay. The team of sophomore Bryce Lloyd, senior Justin Limberg and sophomores Avery Clapp and Christian Mayr swam a 3:23.23. Clapp then placed sixth in the A Final of the 100 Fly as he touched in 49.41. Senior Reef Ide finished in second place in the B Final with a time of 50.71. Freshman Rad Couture took sixth place in 51.50.
 
Hartshorn then raced to a win in the A Final of the 400 IM as clocked in with a time of 4:02.11, to win by more than three tenths of a second. Junior Eric Ji followed in fourth place as he finished in 4:04.99 and shaved more than three seconds off his prelim time. Junior Joe Castagno took eighth place in 4:06.89. Freshman Will Dunlap won the B Final with a time of 4:08.45. Graduate student Ike Shirakata finished in fourth place with a time of 4:10.54.
 
Senior Kellen Roddy swam to a second-place finish in the 200 Free with a time of 1:41.46. Lloyd meanwhile won the B Final as he finished in 1:42.80. Freshman Adam Sandid took third place in 1:43.21 and junior Daniel Byrnes placed fifth in 1:43.83. Junior Jonik Surprenant won the C Final with a finals time of 1:45.64.
 
Limberg followed with an eighth-place finish in the A Final of the 100 Breast with a time of 57.49. Graduate student Brandon Stride finished in second place in the B Final in 57.75. Junior Nathan Jin grabbed fifth place in 58.68. Senior Jay Heymann was the lone Blue Jay in the finals of the 100 Back as he took fourth in the B Final with a time of 53.06.
 
Hopkins finished the night with fourth and eighth place finishes in the 200 Free Relay. Sandid, Clapp, Mayr and Heymann combined for a time of 1:24.22 to tie for fourth place. Ide, Couture, freshman Andrew Gilbert and sophomore Shawn Zhou placed eighth in 1:26.83.
 
The third and final day of the Thomas Murphy Invitational begins at 10:00 am on Sunday with the prelims of the 200 Back.
