Phillips, Silvernale and McElhennon Earn Centennial Athlete of the Week

LANCASTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins Blue Jays had three athletes, one from the men's team and two from the women's, earn Centennial Track Athlete of the Week honors, it was announced earlier today. Lauren Phillips was selected for the third week in a row for her performance at the David Hemery Invitational. Taryn Silvernale earned her first selection of the season and Gavin McElhennon became the second member of the men's team to earn the award this season.

Lauren Phillips took down two more conference records up in Boston this past weekend with her performances in the 200 and the 4x400 relay. Phillips ran a 25.10 to break her previous school record and set a new Centennial Conference record, which had stood since 2002. She was also a part of the 4x400 relay team that ran a 3:50.56 to set a new school and conference record in that event as well. To round out her weekend, Phillips shattered her previous 400 time with a time of 55.35 to finish in 11th place in a field of 231 runners.

Taryn Silvernale competed at the Big Apple Invitational and impressed with her performance in the high jump. She reached a mark of 1.60 meters, which is a top three performance all-time in school history and currently the highest mark in the conference this season. She also competed in the pole vault and recorded a mark of 3.36m, which currently ranks third in the Centennial.

Gavin McElhennon set a school record of his own over the past weekend in the 3000-meter. McElhennon clocked in at 8:11.53 to top his previous mark of 8:18.26. His time currently ranks 11th in the nation in Division III and is the third fasted 3K time in conference history.

Johns Hopkins will return to action this weekend, in their last meet before the Centennial Conference Championship, as they travel to Haverford to compete in the Keough Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 18.
