MANHEIM, PA – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team was recently honored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) with the announcement of the organization's 2022-23 Scholar All-America Team and individual Scholar All-Americans in Division III.
 
Johns Hopkins posted a 3.727 team GPA to rank fourth among all NCAA Division III teams in the Scholar All-America Team category.  The top 30 programs in the nation (by GPA) earned Scholar All-America Team recognition.
 
Just five Division III wrestling programs posted at least a 3.7 GPA with Johns Hopkins the only one of the five from the Centennial Conference; Centennial Conference rivals Gettysburg (26^th) and McDaniel (29^th) also placed in the top 30.
 
This is the seventh consecutive year the Blue Jays have finished in the top 10 in the Scholar All-America Team rankings.  Johns Hopkins' current streak of seven consecutive years ranking in the top 10 is the longest active streak by any Division III wrestling program in the nation.  In fact, only one other school, Stevens (5), has a current streak of even five consecutive top-10 finishes.
 
Criteria for the team award is cumulative grade point of every wrestler who competes at the NCAA Regional Championships with up to two alternates.
 
In addition to claiming the number four spot as a team, Johns Hopkins also had four individuals named to the NWCA Scholar All-America Team in graduate student Joe Paul, senior Brent Lorin and freshmen Jake Hoffmann and Connor Powell.  The selection of the four boosts Johns Hopkins' total number of NWCA Scholar All-Americans to 72 since 1984.
 
The criteria for individual NWCA Scholar All-America honors is as follows:
 
WRESTLING - Must accomplish at least one of the following two:

1. Place in top eight in the regional tournament 
2. Wrestle at least 15 matches and have a win percentage greater than 66%.

ACADEMICS - Must accomplish at least one of the following two:

1. Must have an average GPA of 3.2 over the last 2 semesters or quarters or last 3 trimesters
2. Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2

Paul is making his school-record fourth appearance on the NWCA Scholar All-America Team.  He posted a 32-9 record this season to boost his career mark to 105-54; he is just the third wrestler in program history to reach the 100-win mark and 50 of his 105 career wins were bonus-point victories.  Paul placed second at the Centennial Conference Championships and sixth at the NCAA Regional Championships this season and won a pair of regular season tournaments as well while competing at 174 pounds.  Paul graduated with a degree in international studies and competed during the 2022-23 season as a graduate student.
 
Lorin wrapped up his career this season and earns his second NWCA Scholar All-America nod.  Majoring in applied mathematics and statistics, Lorin wrestled at 133 pounds this season and posted a career-high 29 wins (29-15) to run his record to 72-35.  He counted six pins and eight major decisions to his credit this season and placed second at the Centennial Conference Championships and sixth at the NCAA Regional Championships.  In all, 38 of his 72 career wins earned bonus points with 22 pins, 15 major decisions and one technical fall to his credit.
 
Hoffmann, who is majoring in biomedical engineering, made an immediate impact at 165 pounds as he posted a 28-15 record with eight major decisions, five pins and one technical fall on the year.  He placed in four tournaments as a freshman this year with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Regional Championships and a pair of third-place finishes at regular season tournaments.  Hoffmann's 28 wins are the third-best total in school history by a freshman.
 
Powell also stepped right into the lineup at 149 points and enjoyed a strong start to his career.  He posted a 25-13 record this season with 13 bonus-point victories (three pins, five major decisions, five technical falls) to his credit.  His 25 wins are fifth-best in school history among freshmen.  Powell placed fourth at the Centennial Conference Championships, seventh at the NCAA Regional Championships and had a pair of third-place finishes at regular season tournaments.
