Thomas Yu are moving on to the second day of the NCAA Individual Championships.
Thomas Yu won two singles matches and the duo then won their opening round doubles match on Thursday at the USTA National Campus.
Thomas Yu opened the day with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Derek Hsieh (Chicago) in the round of 32 in the singles championship. He then upset seventh-seeded Michael Melnikov (Swarthmore), the top-ranked player in the Atlantic South. Yu won 6-2, 6-2 to earn his spot in Friday's quarterfinal.
The Yu brothers then took on Hsieh and Andre Leonov in the round of 16 in the doubles championship. The Blue Jay duo won the first set, 6-3, but Hsieh and Leonov answered with a 6-1 win in the second to force a deciding set. The Yus won the final two games, including breaking serve in the 12
th game to win the set 7-5, and advance to the quarterfinals.
The Yus are the first Blue Jay doubles' team to make the quarterfinals since 2012.
Thomas Yu is the first player in program history to make the quarterfinals in both the singles and doubles championship at the NCAAs.
Thomas Yu is now tied for eighth in JHU history with 58 career singles' wins. He is also tied for 10
th with 58 career doubles' wins. In addition, he now has 27 doubles' wins this season, one shy of the program record.
James Yu boasts 25 doubles' wins, tied for fourth most in JHU history.
