Blue Jays Advance to ITA Southeast Semifinals in Singles and Doubles

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team saw two doubles' teams and a singles player advance to the semifinals at ITA Southeast Championship on Sunday.
 
Graduate student Mary Beth Hurley will play in the semifinals of the singles draw on Monday morning. In the doubles draw, sophomore Jay Xiao and freshman Samantha Wang and graduate student Ashley Chang and freshman Sophia Kim all advanced to the semifinals. This is the first time the Blue Jays have had two doubles' teams in the semifinals of the ITA Championships since 2013.
 
Hurley won her round of 16 match 6-3, 6-1 over ninth-seeded Ellie Esterowitz (Haverford). She then beat fifth-seeded Gabriela Moss (W&L) 6-3, 6-4 to advance to Monday's semifinal.
 
Xiao and sophomore Sydney Langer advanced to the quarterfinals in the singles draw. Xiao beat Lola Diaz (Swarthmore) 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (9) in the round of 16. They then lost to top-seeded Lauren Long (W&L) 7-6 (2), 1-6, 1-0 (8). Langer beat ninth-seeded Annie Jennings (W&L) 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the quarters. There she lost to second-seeded Danna Taylor (Carnegie Mellon) 6-4, 7-6 (7).
 
Kim lost her round of 16 match to Moss 6-3, 6-1. Chang lost in the round of 16 to ninth-seeded Divya Venkatarama (Carnegie Mellon) 6-0, 6-4. Wong fell to Long 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16.
 
In the doubles draw, Xiao and Wang beat Emily Beckner and Addison Felts (Mary Washington), 8-3, in the round of 16. The duo then topped third-seeded Raine Weis and Tessa Trate (Christopher Newport), 8-4, to move into the semifinals. Chang and Kim defeated Venkatarama and Zoe Angell 8-4 in the first match of the day. The pair then won 8-3 over Esterowitz and Abbey Russano to advance to the semifinals.
 
Wong and Langer beat Jennings and Stoltz, 8-6, in the round of 16. They then lost a heartbreaker to second-seeded Amanda Hagino and Hana Kimmey (Mary Washington), 8-7 (5), in the quarterfinals. Freshmen Lia Melvin and Aubrey Zhou fell in the round of 16 to fifth-seeded Anna Chow and Taylor, 8-2.
 
The semifinals of the doubles draw are set to begin at 9:00 am on Monday, September 25. The singles of the semifinals draw are scheduled for an 11:30 am start.
