Short-Handed Blue Jays Fall at McDaniel 33-17

Blue Jays Win Four of Six Contested Bouts

WESTMINSTER, MD – The McDaniel wrestling team picked up four wins by forfeit and added a pin at 184 to fuel a 33-17 victory over visiting Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference action at the Gill Center Saturday afternoon.  The Green Terror improve to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial, while the Blue Jays slip to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the Centennial.

Where the Match Was Won
The Green Terror scored wins by forfeit at 125 and 133 to jump out to an early 12-0 lead and answered a first-period pin by Johns Hopkins freshman Max Apsel at 141 with another forfeit at 149 to grab an 18-6 advantage that the Blue Jays couldn't overcome.

Blue Jay Winners
Apsel evened his season record at 6-6 with his second pin of the season as he needed just 63 seconds to stick Justin Shiflett at 141 to make it 12-6.

After McDaniel picked up back-to-back wins at 149 (forfeit) and 157 (decision), the Blue Jays sliced a 21-6 deficit to 21-13 with consecutive wins of their own at 165 and 174.  Sophomore Jake Hoffmann needed overtime to slip past Ryan Ohler at 165 as he scored a 10-7 decision with a takedown just 12 seconds into overtime.

Hoffmann's win was followed by a Chris Roybal major decision 174.  Roybal used a takedown in each period to fuel an 11-2 victory over Dalton Pearl.

McDaniel iced the victory with a first-period pin at 184 and a forfeit at 197 before Johns Hopkins' Jacob Pomykata closed out the match with a 14-4 major decision of Kaden Bryan at 285.  Bryan grabbed an early 3-0 lead, but Pomykata used a second-period takedown and a four-point near fall to grab the lead for good and added another takedown in the third period to close out his first major decision victory of the year.

Notes of Interest
Roybal is now just one win shy of 25 in his career (24-13).  Apsel's 63-second pin is the sixth-fastest pin of the season for the Blue Jays and the 13th pin of the year for JHU in under two minutes.  Hoffmann bumped his season record to 25-7 with his win today and he joins Paul Bewak (2012-15) as the only wrestlers in school history to win 25 or more matches as a freshman and sophomore.

What's Next
Johns Hopkins will return to action on January 26 when the Blue Jays travel to Ursinus to take on the Bears in another Centennial Conference match.
