CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Johns Hopkins men's swim team turned in three NCAA qualifying times and 11 career best swims on day two of the Cavalier Invitational. The Blue Jays also competed at the nearby Tiger Winter Open.
Senior
Reef Ide led a quartet of Blue Jays in the 100 Fly with a third-place finish. His time of 48.81 was a career best. Freshman
Rad Couture finished in seventh place with a career-best time of 49.29. Sophomore
Andrew Huang took 13
th place in 50.32 and senior
Alex Ren placed 14
th in 51.18.
Graduate student
Ike Shirakata then clocked in with a time of 3:53.89 for third place in the 400 IM. His time is an NCAA B time and the third fastest in program history. Freshman
Will Dunlap finished in seventh place with a time of 4:02.64.
Junior
Daniel Byrnes then paced a group of six Blue Jays in the 200 Free. He turned in an NCAA B and personal best time of 1:39.13 for 10
th place. Senior
Jay Heymann finished in 12
th place with a career-best time of 1:40.01. Sophomore
Bryce Lloyd then took 17
th place in 1:40.93, followed by junior
Jonik Surprenant with a career-best swim of 1:41.45. Freshman
Adam Sandid placed 20
th in a career-best time of 1:41.77 and classmate
Andrew Gilbert placed 23
rd in 1:44.74.
Junior
Mitchell List finished in eighth place in the 100 Breast in 58.29. Ide then took third in the 100 Back as he turned in a career-best and NCAA qualifying time of 49.11. Sophomore
Christian Mayr turned in a career-best swim of 20.77 in the 50 Free time trial. Junior
Eric Ji did the same in the 100 Breast time trial with a swim of 56.06.
At Towson, senior
Justin Limberg placed fifth in the 100 Fly in 52.85 while senior
Kellen Roddy placed sixth in 53.68. Sophomore
Matthew Hartshorn then took second place in the 400 IM in 4:03.58. Graduate student
Brandon Stride and sophomore
Avery Clapp then won back-to-back events. Stride won the 100 Breast in 57.67 and Clapp beat the field in the 100 Back in 50.40.
Roddy finished in third place in the 1650 Free and then the Jays took third in the 200 Free Relay. Stride, Limberg, Hartshorn and Roddy combined for a time of 1:29.88. Stride's leadoff leg of 22.76 was a career-best swim. Clapp earned his second win of the night as he took the top spot in the 200 Back in 1:47.03.
Hopkins ended the day by taking second through fifth in the 200 Breast. Limberg led the way with his time of 2:04.24 for second place. Stride placed third in 2:05.31, Hartshorn took fourth in 2:05.67 and Roddy placed fifth in 2:14.69.
Hopkins returns to action at the Cavalier Invitational on Sunday at 10:00 am with the prelims of the 200 Back.
