ROCHESTER, NY – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team had seven of its nine entries win at least one match and three Blue Jays remain alive after the first day of competition at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championships at RIT. The Blue Jays amassed 38.5 points on day one and currently sit in 14
th place in the 21-team regional.Â

TCNJ rang up 92 points to grab the top spot in the team standings after the first day. Ithaca (82 points), Elizabethtown (79.5), Ursinus (61.5) and Oswego St. (59.5) round out the top five.

Below is a summary that includes each Johns Hopkins wrestler that won at least one match on the opening day. Wrestlers marked with an asterisk remain alive heading into the second day of the tournament. Each of the three Blue Jays who have advanced are guaranteed of a top eight finish; they can qualify for the NCAA Championships with three straight wins on day two.

125 – Riley Parker (Gr.) *
Parker earned a first-round bye and eased into the quarterfinals with a third-period pin of Alfred State's Mason Drew (6:28). He was bumped to the consolation bracket after falling to top-seeded Matt Griffin of TCNJ via a first-period pin, but rebounded with a 20-5 technical fall victory over Ithaca's Cosmo Damiani in the consolation bracket to advance to day two. Parker led 10-2 after the first period and used five takedowns and a four-point near fall to fuel his victory.

157 – Jake Hoffmann (So.) *
Hoffmann scored a pair of technical fall victories to open his day as he topped Daniel Kosinski (Scranton), 20-3, and Chirs Sockler (Muhlenberg), 22-7, to advance to the quarterfinals. He dropped a 17-2 decision to Ryan Datz of TCNJ in the quarters to slip to the consolation bracket. There, he scored a 17-11 win over Penn Tech's Liam Goodrich to move forward; he used seven points in both the first and third periods to highlight his effort. With his three wins today, Hoffman has tied the Johns Hopkins single-season record for victories (36) as he joins Paul Bewak (2013-14) and Issac Morales (2017-18) atop the JHU single-season victories chart.

165 – Chris Roybal (Sr.) *
Like Hoffmann, Roybal opened with a pair of victories to advance to the quarterfinals. He scored a 7-2 decision of Travis Green (Penn Tech) in the opening round and added a 3-0 victory over Hunter Hughes (Cortland) in his second match before drawing Shawn Marchesano of Ursinus in the quarterfinals. Roybal led 3-0 early, but Marchesano rallied with a three-point near fall and an escape in the second period and then added an early escape in the third period to pull out a 6-5 victory. In the consolation bracket, Roybal made quick work of Oneonta's Matthew Coffey as he scored an 18-3 technical fall on the strength of five takedowns.

174 – Fritz Maurath (Sr.)
After an opening-round bye, Maurath fell to the consolation bracket with a 17-2 loss to James Romaine of TCNJ, but bounced back with a technical fall of his own against Elmira's Bryan Stafford (22-7). Maurath used two takedowns, a reversal and three sets of back points to fuel his victory over Stafford. He was then eliminated by Scranton's Jeremiah Oakes, 11-0.

184 – Noah Graber (Jr.)
Graber opened his day with a second-period pin of Scranton's Quinten Laughlin (4:14) before slipping to the consolation bracket with a 21-5 loss to TCNJ's Reid Colella. He added his second bonus-point victory of the day in the consolation bracket with a decisive 18-1 technical fall of Keystone's Derrrick DeMann as he used three takedowns and two, four-point near falls to lock up the victory. He was eliminated in the next round of the consolation bracket by Ithaca Jake Jones.

197 – Samuel Gledhill (Fr.)
Bumping up a weight class for the regional, Gledhill dropped a 15-7 major decision to Muhlenberg's Paul Parise in his opening bout, but came back with a 15-5 major decision of his own against Scranton's Jonathan Sklavounos in the consolation bracket. Down 5-3 late in the second period, Gledhill used an escape and takedown to grab a 7-5 lead entering the third period and then used an escape, takedown and a four-point near fall to lock up the 15-5 victory. His run ended in the next round of the consolation bracket as he fell to Oswego's Anthony Cascen, 22-5.

285 – Jacob Pomykata (So.)
Pomykata opened his day with a first-round match against Scranton's Sean Cordaro and led 10-0 late in the second period before sticking Cordaro (4:53) to advance. In the round of 16, he trailed Ithaca's Jeremy Mazzella, 1-0, entering the third period before using an escape and a late penalty point to pull out a 2-1 victory. In the quarterfinals, Pomykata fell to Brockport's Nick Franco by fall in the first period and was then eliminated in the consolation bracket when he dropped a 4-1 overtime decision to Cortland's Dylan Houseknecht.

What's Next
The final day of competition at the regional championships will start with the semifinals at 11 am on Saturday morning. Wrestling will continue throughout the day with the top three finishers in each weight class earning a spot in the upcoming NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.
