BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's track & field team played host for the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational Saturday afternoon, winning a trio of events facing off against top competition across all three divisions.
The Blue Jays wasted no time securing their first individual win of the afternoon, with
Matthew Kelly taking the top spot in the 5000 with a person-best time of 14:44.41. Coming in behind the sophomore was
Dhruv Mahajan, who also set a career-best time after crossing the line in 15:21.13 to finish 11
th.
Hopkins' 4x100 team set a season-best time of 42.90 to finish third before the Blue Jays took their second first-place finish of the day in the 1500.
In a packed field, it was
Emmanuel Leblond beating out the rest with his time of 3:55.54 that included an impressive kick in the final 100 to pass a pair of runners in front of him. Also earning a top 10 finish was
Rowan Cassidy (eighth – 3:59.93), with
Brandon Chang and
Valdis Slokenbergs setting PRs in their respective heats.
The personal-best times continued in the 110-meter hurdles in which
Sebastian Tangelson (seventh – 16.44) and
Owen Takahashi (10
th – 16.72) both grabbed spots in the top 10 before
James Borkman earned a seventh-place finish in the 100 with his time of 11.15.
Alex Colletti led a quarter of top 10 finishers in the 400, finishing second with a season-best time of 49.87 with Joshua Lee (fourth – 50.76),
Spencer Ye (fifth – 50.86) and
Fisayo Omonije (eighth – 51.38) also placing well.
After a pair of top 12 finishes from
Zachary Martin and
Connor Oiler in the 800 and 400-meter hurdles respectively, it was Colletti staying hot by tying the freshman record in the 200 with his time of 22.23, before Hopkins concluded the meet's track events with another dominant display, this time in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Charles Teeter took the top spot in the event, crossing the line in first with a time of 9:32.62, with
Jonas Larson and
Andrew Myers also securing top-five finishes to wrap up the day.
Hopkins saw similar success in the field events, starting with a personal-best effort by
Peter Lim in the pole vault in which he finished fourth after clearing 4.35 meters. Lim's efforts were followed by sixth and ninth-place efforts by
Ethan Oluwole and
Wech Ring in the long jump before the Blue Jays swept the podium in the triple jump.
It was Oluwole taking the crown with his mark of 13.92 meters, while
Oluwademilade Adeniran and Tangelson finished second and third with distances of 13.79 and 13.69 meters respectively.
The meet came to a close with a season-best effort from
Ryan Braga, who hit a mark of 12.41 meters in the shot put to finish eighth before earning a fourth-place finish in the discus throw.
Hopkins is back in action starting Thursday, April 25 to compete at the Penn Relays as well as the Kaiser Invitational.
