Johns Hopkins Names Hassaan Stamps Associate Head Track and Field Coach

Accomplished Coach, National Champion Joins Van Allen’s Staff

BALTIMORE, MD – Bobby Van Allen, the head coach of the highly accomplished Johns Hopkins men's and women's cross country and track teams, announced the appointment of Hassaan Stamps as the associate head coach of the Blue Jay track and field teams today.  Stamps takes over for Shedrick Elliott III, who was recently named the women's track and field and cross country coach at Rowan University.

"After an extensive national search, I am excited to welcome Hassaan to the Blue Jay family," Van Allen stated.  "He has a proven record of success as both a student-athlete and coach and has worked with and developed individuals at a variety of levels in a number of different events.  I am looking forward to working with him as we continue to build on our past successes."

Most recently, Stamps served for two years as the Director of the track and field and cross country programs at Warner University (FL).  There, he coached several All-Americans in both indoor and outdoor track with one top 25 team finish in women's track.  In addition, the teams produced a number of individual champions and medalists at the Sun Conference Championships.

Prior to his time at Warner, Stamps served as the Associate Head Track & Field and Cross Country Coach at East Tennessee State University from 2013-22.  While at ETSU, Stamps served as the program's recruiting coordinator and focused primarily on developing the Buccaneer sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams.  In nine years there, he coached three All-Americans, more than 30 Southern Conference Champions and more than 100 of his student-athletes earned podium finishes at the Southern Conference Indoor and Outdoor Track Championships.

"I am honored to join the Johns Hopkins University athletic program and excited about the opportunity to contribute to such a prestigious institution," Stamps noted. "I was drawn to this opportunity because of coach Van Allen's energy and comprehension of expectations, not only in the athletic space but most importantly on the academic front.  I want to thank coach Van Allen and Director of Athletics Jen Baker for this amazing opportunity.  I look forward to working with the talented student-athletes and dedicated staff to build on the great tradition and wonderful success that is Blue Jay track and field."

In addition to his coaching experience at the collegiate level, Stamps also served as the head coach of the national team for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  His athletes there competed at both the World Championships and the Olympics and he directed the training programs for athletes competing at the sport's highest level.

Stamps graduated from the University of Tennessee with degrees in Psychology and sport administration.  As a student-athlete at Tennessee, Stamps was a two-time team captain where he helped lead the Volunteers to consecutive SEC Outdoor Championships as well as the 2001 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and 2002 NCAA Division I Indoor Track National Championships.  He earned All-America honors four times in his career and was a member of the 4x100-meter relay team that finished as the national runner-up at the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships.

Stamps is joining one of the most successful track programs in the nation.  Under Van Allen's guidance, the Blue Jays have collectively won 45 Centennial Conference team titles since 2010 with dozens of All-Americans, Academic All-Americans and individual conference champions during that time as well.
