BRIDGEWATER, PA – The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's basketball team closed out the Bridgewater Invitational in commanding fashion on Sunday afternoon, rolling past No. 20 Christopher Newport, 59-38, inside Nininger Hall. The win moves the Blue Jays to 5-0 on the season.
In what was expected to be a tightly contested ranked matchup, the opening quarter lived up to the billing. Neither team led by more than two until the final seconds, as both sides traded baskets throughout the frame. A late layup from
Jocelyn Goldstein gave Hopkins a 14-11 advantage after ten minutes.
The Blue Jays wasted no time building momentum in the second quarter, opening with a 6-0 run on layups from Goldstein,
Grace Soltes and
Lauren Knudson to push the lead to nine. After a brief CNU bucket, a 5-0 stretch capped by a
Layla Henderson three extended the advantage to 12. The Captains cut it to single digits briefly, but a Knudson three restored a 14-point cushion at 30-16. CNU hit a three in the final seconds of the half, trimming the lead to 30-19 at the break.
Hopkins continued to control the pace in the third quarter, growing the lead to as many as 19 at 42-23 after a
Beth Corelli layup. The Blue Jays then turned the fourth quarter into a defensive showcase, holding CNU to just six points on 2-of-16 shooting while forcing three steals and adding a block. Henderson's late and-one pushed the lead to 21 and sealed the victory over the 20th-ranked Captains.
Soltes and Goldstein paced all scorers with 10 points each, with Soltes adding seven rebounds and three blocks.
Macie Feldman was dominant on the glass, hauling in a game-high 14 rebounds to go with four points, seven assists and a steal.
Johns Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, November 18, for an exhibition at Morgan State. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. inside Hill Field House.
