PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team wrapped up the regular season at the Temple Invitational Sunday. The Blue Jays went 0-5 against a slate of ranked opponents. JHU finishes the regular season with a record of 24-17. The 24 wins are tied for sixth most in program history.
Hopkins opened the day against fourth-ranked Penn and dropped a close one, 15-12, highlighted by a win for the Epee squad.
Matthew Dao won all three of his bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 6-3 win.
Omar Reyes led the Foil squad with two wins in a 6-3 loss. And in the Sabre,
Alex Jeffords led the way with two wins in a 6-3 loss.
JHU then faced Stevens, ranked fifth in Division III, and fell 16-11. Once again, the Epee squad picked up a 6-3 win, led by three wins from
Jorge Gana.
Vir Gogoi won a pair of bouts in a 6-3 loss for the Foil squad. Jeffords and
Neil Pandey won one bout each in a 7-2 loss for the Sabre squad.
The Blue Jays followed that with a 20-7 loss to the 10
th-ranked St. John's Johnnies. Pandey went 3-0 in a tough 5-4 loss for the Sabre squad. While in the Foil, Reyes earned the lone win for the Blue Jays. Gana won twice to pace JHU in a 7-2 loss for the Epee squad.
Hopkins dropped a 16-11 decision to sixth-ranked Princeton in the next to last round.
Alex Pan won twice and the Sabre squad lost 5-4.
Yi Peng Sha did the same for the Foil squad in a 5-4 loss. And in the Epee, Gana, Dao and
Ayan Bhatnagar each won one bout in a 6-3 loss.
Hopkins closed out the day with a 17-10 loss to seventh-ranked Penn State.
Sam Roberts won two of his three bouts to lead the Sabre squad in a 6-3 loss. Reyes did the same for the Foil squad, which fell 6-3. In the Epee, Bhatnagar and Gana won twice each in a 5-4 loss.
The Blue Jays return to action on Sunday, March 2 at the MACFA Championships as they look to defend their conference title.
