CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – On day one of the Cavalier Invitational,
Aden Li broke the program's freshman record in the 100 Back and the Blue Jays posted seven NCAA B qualifying times.
Hopkins opened with second and fourth place finishes in the 200 Free Relay.
Jonathan Wang,
Adam Sandid,
Christian Mayr and
Avery Clapp grabbed second and posted an NCAA B time of 1:21.20. Wang also posted a then career-best in his lead-off leg with a swim of 20.75. The team of
Rad Couture,
Andrew Gilbert,
Daniel Byrnes and
Jay Heymann finished in fourth in 1:23.24. Couture also posted a career-best in his lead-off leg of 20.93.
Josiah March then took fourth place in the 500 Free with a swim of 4:28.33.
Larkin Helman followed in fifth place in 4:31.22. Both times were NCAA B times as well as career bests. In the 200 IM,
Joe Castagno led a quartet of Blue Jays that took third through sixth. Castagno finished in an NCAA B time of 1:48.81.
Eric Ji touched in 1:51.00, followed by
Matthew Hartshorn (1:52.06) and
Will Dunlap (1:52.48).
The Blue Jays then grabbed fourth through sixth in the 50 Free, led by
Jonathan Wang, who touched in 20.74. Sandid and Heymann also turned in career-best swims, touching in 20.85 and 20.98, respectively.
Hopkins wrapped up the first day with a win and third-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay.
Bryce Lloyd, Wang, Clapp and Heymann won the relay with an NCAA B time of 3:15.75. It is also the eighth fastest time in school history. Lloyd's lead-off leg of 49.16 is a career best and an NCAA B time. Li,
Nathan Jin, Couture and Dunlap then placed third in 3:25.30. Li's lead-off leg (48.51) broke
Emile Kuyl's freshman record of 49.03, set in 2016. His time is also an NCAA B time.
JHU is back in action on Friday, February 7 for the second day of the Cavalier Invitational.
