MADISON, NJ –
Josephine Chang won the Sabre title to lead Johns Hopkins at the 2025 National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Saturday. The Blue Jays finished third overall and the Sabre squad placed second, the Foil squad placed third and the Epee squad took sixth.
The Sabre squad finished third with a 39-3 record in pool play. Chang went 8-1 and earned a six seed in the individual championship. She won all four of her bouts to become the first Blue Jay to win the NIWFA Sabre title since 2017 and just the fourth overall.
Ky McSweeney went 8-1 in pool play and then 2-1 in the individual championship. They fell to Chang in the semifinals and finished in a tie for third.
Jessie Tong finished pool play with a 13-1 record and then advanced to the quarterfinals in the individual championship. Also competing in the Sabre were
Maddie Huang (5-0) and
Lauren Prieur (5-0).
The Foil squad went 34-8 in pool play.
Rosy Cepero led the Blue Jays with a fifth-place finish. She went 12-2 in pool play and then 1-1 in the individual championship.
Sophia Baleeiro (4-0),
Bethany Lee (6-4) and
Camille Oteyza (12-2) also competed in pool play.
The Epee squad went 26-16 in pool play.
Anika Kale (2-2) and
Katelyn McShine (4-6) competed in pool A.
Ameera Ebrahim (5-4) and
Mickey Zhang (5-0) competed in pool B.
Mariela Abramson (5-4) and
Janie McSweeney (5-0) competed in pool C.
Chang finished the day with a 12-1 record and moved into second place in Johns Hopkins history with 260 career Sabre wins. Cepero went 13-3 on the day to move into second in program history with 224 career Foil wins. In addition, Cepero now has 86 wins on the season – third most in the Foil in JHU history.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 8 at the NCAA Regional Championship.
