BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team picked up three national honors from the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) on Tuesday. Junior
Josephine Chang was named the Division III Sabre Athlete of the Year and freshman
Maddie Huang was tabbed the Division III Sabre Newcomer of the Year. In addition,
Milos Vasic was named the Division III Women's Assistant Coach of the Year.
Chang is the second Blue Jay to earn national fencer of the year honors and the first to do so in the Sabre. This is the second straight year that Hopkins has produced the women's Sabre Newcomer of the Year.
Chang previously earned National Collegiate Honorable Mention and Division III First Team All-America honors this year. She led the Sabe squad in wins (87) for the third consecutive year and ranks second in Johns Hopkins history with 285 career Sabre wins. Chang led the Blue Jays to their second straight Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Sabre title and won her second straight individual title. She finished in ninth at the NCAA Championships, the highest finish by a Blue Jay in any weapon.
Huang ranked third on the Blue Jay Sabre squad with 43 wins and earned USFCA Mid-Atlantic/South All-Region honors. She opened her career with a 15
th place finish at the Coach Nikki Franke Classic at Temple. Huang helped the Blue Jays capture their second straight and ninth overall EWFC Sabre title. She went on to finish in 26
th place at the NCAA Regional Championship.
Vasic coached the Blue Jay Sabre squad to a combined record of 368-186 and the EWFC title this season. He also coached Chang to the EWFC and National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) individual titles. Five Blue Jays competed at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championship, with Chang and sophomore
Lauren Prieur both finishing in the top-15.
