Game Notes | For the 128th Time, It's Hopkins-Maryland

Blue Jays, Terrapins Meet Under the Lights in College Park

The Game
•  Johns Hopkins (6-6, 0-4 B1G) hits the road for the final regular season game of the 2025 season as the Blue Jays head south to College Park to take on Maryland (9-2, 2-2 B1G) in the 128th renewal of the greatest rivalry in college lacrosse.  Faceoff is set for 8 pm on Friday, April 18 (BTN).

When Last We Saw Them
•  Johns Hopkins dropped its fourth straight as the Blue Jays fell at eighth-ranked Penn State, 10-4, last Saturday in State College.
• Maryland bounced back from an 8-6 loss at Rutgers two weeks ago with a dominating 13-8 win at then third-ranked Ohio State last Saturday.

The Facts
•  This is the 138th season of Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse.  JHU first fielded a team in 1883.
•  Johns Hopkins enters this week's game with an all-time record of 1,033-381-15 (.728).
• Johns Hopkins is the only men's lacrosse program in the nation with 1,000 or more all-time victories.  The Blue Jays picked up the program's 1,000th victory with an 11-10 win over Loyola on February 19, 2022.
•  JHU owns 44 national championships with nine NCAA titles, 29 USILA titles and six ILA crowns to its credit.

• Johns Hopkins is listed as receiving votes in this week's USILA Coaches Poll and the KANE Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
• Maryland is ranked third in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the KANE Inside Lacrosse  Media Poll this week.

Poll Notes of Interest• Including this week's poll, the USILA has issued 566 polls since the debut poll in 1973.  Johns Hopkins has appeared in the top 20 in 542 of those 566 polls and has been ranked in the top 10 in 452 of the 566.

Series History
• Johns Hopkins and Maryland will be meeting for the 128th time this week.  The series dates to a 10-0 Johns Hopkins victory in 1895 and the Blue Jays are 76-50-1 all-time against the Terps.

B1G Tournament Talk
• With one game remaining in the regular season for all six Big Ten teams, the bracket for the upcoming league tournament has taken shape.  And then again, it's hasn't.
• There are no less than eight different scenarios that can play out based on the results of this week's game.  
• The only team locked into a seed is Johns Hopkins, which will be the number six seed regardless of the results of this week's games.

• Quarterfinal games in the Big Ten Tournament will be played on Saturday, April 26 with the number three seed hosting the number six seed and the number four seed hosting the number five seed.

Throw Out the Rankings
• Johns Hopkins is listed as receiving votes in both major polls this week, while Maryland sits at number three in both polls.
• Since 2013, there have been four instances where a Johns Hopkins team that has been ranked at least 10 spots lower than Maryland has knocked off the Terps.  Further, three of those four games were played at Maryland and one was on a neutral field in the Big Ten Tournament (2019).

On This Date
• Dating back to 1928, this week's game will be the 15th game on record that Johns Hopkins has played on April 14, the first since 2015 and the third against Maryland.
• Johns Hopkins is 10-4 all-time in games played on April 14 and has won four of its last five games played on this date.

New-Look Jays
• Johns Hopkins had 26 players appear in the season-opening 13-10 win at Denver.
• Remarkably, of the 26 players who appeared in the game, 13 were making their Blue Jay debut, including nine who had never appeared in a college game before that day.
• Of the 13 players who wore the Hopkins Blue and Black for the first time that day, four were graduate transfers, four were freshmen, four were sophomores and one was a junior.
• 29 JHU players have appeared in at least five games thus far - 16 of the 29 had never appeared in a game for Johns Hopkins prior to February 1 of this year.

Don't Leave Early
• Fans at Johns Hopkins lacrosse games shouldn't leave early as it's likely the game will be decided in the final 10 minutes.
• Nine of Johns Hopkins' 12 games to-date have been decided by three goals or less with four, one-goal games and five, three-goal games.  Only three Johns Hopkins game this season - an 11-6 win against Georgetown, a 14-10 loss to Ohio State and a 10-4 loss at Penn State - have been decided by more than three goals.
• Close games are nothing new for the Blue Jays under head coach Peter Milliman.  Dating back to the start of the 2023 season (a span of 46 games), the Blue Jays have played 28 games that have been decided by three goals or less, including 14, one-goal games, five games decided by two goals and nine others that have been decided by three goals.
• Since the start of the 2024 season (28 games), 20 Blue Jay games have been decided by three goals or less with 10 decided by one goal, three decided by two goals and seven decided by three goals.
