LANDOVER, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's track and field team turned in a strong performance at the Cardinal Track and Field Classic on Saturday, hosted by Catholic University, piling up 30 top-10 finishes across 13 events to capture the team title. The Blue Jays totaled 133 points to finish ahead of Bridgewater (93) and Mary Washington (51). Junior
Alex Colletti led the way in his first meet of the new year, accounting for two of the meet's three event victories.
Colletti starred on the track, winning the 60m dash after posting two of the top times in Division III this season. He opened the day with a 6.95 in the prelims, ranking 40
th nationally, before improving to a 6.94 in the finals—good for 37
th in the nation—and the event title. The junior added another win in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line first in 22.22.
Josh Lee joined Colletti in the 60m dash, finishing seventh with a personal-best 7.13, while
Spencer Ye added a runner-up finish in the 200m with a time of 23.08.
Matteo O'Malley provided Hopkins' third event win of the meet, claiming the 800m title in a personal-best 1:58.07.
Samson Dessalines also earned a top-10 finish in the event, placing seventh in 2:03.94.
The Blue Jays recorded three top-10 finishes in the 60m hurdles, led by
Tyler Caswell's fourth-place showing (8.67).
Ryan Zhang followed in sixth (8.78), while
Jack Maier rounded out the group with a personal-best 8.80 to place seventh.
Michael Long finished third in the 400m dash with a time of 52.67. In the 3000m,
Vaughn Decker posted a personal-best 9:01.37 to place fourth, while
Joey Souverein added a sixth-place finish in 9:11.04.
Hopkins closed the track portion of the meet with a second-place finish in the 4x400m relay, as the quartet of Ye, Maier, Dessalines and Long crossed the line in 3:32.82.
In the field events, the Blue Jays produced four top-10 finishes in the long jump.
Wech Ring led the group with a second-place leap of 6.15m (20-2.25), followed by
Alexander Williams in fourth (5.84m | 19-2),
Carter Chui in seventh (5.72m | 18-9.25) and Lee in ninth (5.50m | 18-0.5).
Hopkins matched that output in the high jump with four more top-10 finishes. Williams paced the Blue Jays with a fourth-place jump of 1.80m (5-10.75), while
Sebastian Tangelson and Ring tied for sixth at 1.70m (5-7).
Ted Richards added a ninth-place finish, also clearing 1.70m.
In the pole vault,
Seth Wyzykowski placed third after clearing 4.40m (14-5.25), while
Aidan Rothstein and
Jack O'Brien tied for sixth at 3.95m (12-11.5). Williams recorded his third top-10 finish of the meet with a second-place showing in the triple jump (12.80m | 42-0), and Ring added his third top-10 result with an eighth-place finish at 11.89m (39-0.25).
Ryan Braga highlighted the throws for Hopkins, placing second in the shot put with a season-best mark of 13.33m (43-8.75).
Ryan Jameson finished seventh (12.39m | 40-7.75) and
Alexander Yeon took 10
th (12.10m | 39-8.5) to add to the Blue Jays' top-10 total.
Leo Anderson capped the field events with a fifth-place finish in the weight throw, recording a mark of 13.76m (45-1.75).
Johns Hopkins returns to action on Friday, January 23, at the Dr. Sander Scorcher, hosted by Columbia University. Events at The Armory are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
