Hopkins Scores Final Three to Top Towson, 13-11

Blue Jays Hold Tigers Scoreless in Fourth Quarter

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team bumped its early-season record to 2-0 as the Blue Jays scored the final three goals of Tuesday's game against visiting Towson and held the Tigers scoreless in the fourth quarter of a 13-11 victory at Homewood Field.  The win is the fifth straight in the series for the Blue Jays, who improve to 46-6 all-time against the Tigers.

In a game featuring seven ties and four lead changes, the Blue Jays appeared destined to enter the fourth quarter facing a one-goal deficit after Will Schoonmaker's nifty goal with 25 seconds left in the third quarter gave Towson an 11-10 lead.

However, the Blue Jays answered before the period was over as they turned a Joe Hobot faceoff win into a game-tying goal with nine seconds left on the third-quarter clock as a Hobot fed the crease to long stick midfielder Tyler Eye, who matched Schoonmaker's creativity with a nice finish of his own in traffic to draw the Blue Jays even.

The 11-all tie would hold for more than nine minutes before Johns Hopkins got the first of two straight Charlie Iler goals – this one off a quick feed from Chuck Rawson – with 5:35 remaining to grab a one-goal lead.  The Tigers would win the ensuing faceoff, but a turnover and clear by the Blue Jays led to Iler's second goal of the period, this one off a good look from senior Matt Collison, who found Iler alone on the back door with 3:41 remaining.
Towson had four possessions down the stretch, but the Blue Jays forced three turnovers in that time and the Tigers managed just one shot, which came with less than 30 seconds to play, as the Blue Jay defense closed the game by holding Towson scoreless for the final 15:25.

The late-game three-goal run was the final spurt in a game that saw both teams control play for stretches of varying lengths.

Johns Hopkins jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game on the first two of Jimmy Ayers' four goals on the day, but Towson scored twice in a span of 15 seconds within a minute of the second Ayers goal to pull even.

Those two Tiger goals, which came from Mikey Weisshaar and Kai Lopez, sprung Towson on a 7-2 run that extended into the second quarter and gave TU a 7-4 lead.  Weisshaar and Lopez both scored twice during the spree for the Tigers.

Johns Hopkins, which had scored just once in more than 16 minutes when the second-quarter clock dripped under the six-minute mark, used Ayers' third of the game off an assist from Reece DiCicco to ignite a three-goal spurt that led to a 7-7 tie at the half.  Rawson and Ayers would score the second and third goals in that three-goal run.

The teams split the first six goals of the third quarter with ties at 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10 before Schoonmaker's goal gave the Tigers their final lead of the game.  Eye answered just 16 seconds later to spring the game-ending Johns Hopkins run.
