BALTIMORE, MD – The 11
th-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team split its Saturday slate at Babb Field at Stromberg Stadium, edging Baldwin Wallace, 5-4, in a tightly contested opener before falling to St. John Fisher University, 9-6, in the nightcap. With the split, the Blue Jays move to 2-1 on the season.
Game 1: Hopkins 5, Baldwin Wallace 4
Kieren Collins set the tone in the opener, delivering 5.0 strong innings to earn the win. The right-hander worked around early command issues and consistently escaped trouble, striking out seven while allowing just one run on four hits and two walks.
After a scoreless first inning, Hopkins broke through in the second.
Lukas Geer and
Clay Hartje opened the frame with back-to-back doubles to plate the game's first run. Two batters later,
Aaron Bock launched a two-run homer onto University Parkway to push the lead to 3-0.
Baldwin Wallace answered with a run in the third on a fielder's choice, but the Blue Jays responded immediately.
Alex Shane doubled to lead off the inning and scored on Hartje's single down the right-field line. Bock later delivered again, ripping an RBI single to score Geer from first and extend the advantage to 5-1.
Charles Monterrosa relieved Collins and cruised through the sixth and seventh innings before the Yellow Jackets mounted a late push. A three-run homer in the eighth trimmed the deficit to one, but
Nicolas Jos entered and shut the door. The senior retired all five batters he faced—three by strikeout—to secure the save.
Inside the Box Score
• Collins (1-0) allowed one run over 5.0 innings with seven strikeouts. Jos earned the save, striking out three of the five hitters he faced.
• Four Blue Jays recorded a multi-hit game. Bock paced the offense, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a two-run homer. Hartje added two hits and two RBIs, while four Blue Jays recorded multi-hit performances.
Game 2: St. John Fisher 9, Hopkins 6
The nightcap proved more volatile, as early command issues put Hopkins in a hole it couldn't quite climb out of.
Starter
William Jaun struggled with control from the outset, issuing walks that allowed St. John Fisher to capitalize for two runs in the first. The Cardinals added two more in the second on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch to build a 4-0 lead.
Hopkins answered in the bottom half of the second. Geer and Hartje drew back-to-back walks to set the table for
Shane Keough, who crushed a three-run homer to right field, cutting the deficit to 4-3 and igniting the dugout.
The Cardinals, however, responded with three runs in the third, aided by additional walks.
Cole Jefferson eventually stabilized the game, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts to keep Hopkins within striking distance.
The Blue Jays chipped away late. An error in the seventh helped spark a run, and Bock delivered an RBI double in the eighth to make it 8-5. After
Jacob Harris and
Luke Baker were hit by pitches to load the bases, Baker's plunk forced in another run to pull Hopkins within two. A rally-ending double play halted the momentum, and St. John Fisher added an insurance run in the ninth to seal the 9-6 decision.
Inside the Box Score
• Hopkins drew eight walks and three HBP but managed just three hits.
• Keough drove in three runs on his second-inning homer.
• The pitching staff issued 12 walks, the program's highest single-game total since 2024.
