AUBURNDALE, FL – The No. 2/2 Johns Hopkins baseball team surrendered the lead in the fifth inning and dropped its fourth game of the season Wednesday morning, falling 6-2 to Chicago in the final game of the RussMatt Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park. With the loss, the Blue Jays move to 13-4 on the year.
Starting pitcher
William Jaun cruised through the first two innings, and Hopkins struck first despite struggling at the plate early.
Kieffer Ary provided the spark, driving in the game's first run with an RBI triple that scored
Aaron Bock from first to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.
Chicago (7-7) answered in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at 1-1 on an RBI double from Michael Gladden. Hopkins regained the lead in the fourth, as
Lukas Geer worked a walk and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
The Maroons took control from there, scoring the game's next five runs. Max Wiesner tied the game in the fifth with an RBI single with the bases loaded, and Chicago followed with a three-run sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Two of those runs came on separate Hopkins wild pitches.
The Blue Jays' offense was unable to respond, failing to mount a threat after the fourth inning. Chicago added an insurance run in the eighth on another bases-loaded RBI single to account for the 6-2 final.
Hopkins returns to action Friday, March 20, when it hosts Wesleyan for a doubleheader at Babb Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
