ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's track and field team competed at the Navy Outdoor Invitational on Saturday at the Naval Academy, recording 23 top-10 finishes across 16 events while posting several marks that rank among the best in program history and in Division III this season.
Hopkins showcased its depth in the distance events, highlighted by a dominant performance in the 5,000 meters.
Dane Spahr led a group of five Blue Jays in the top 10, capturing first place with a time of 15:02.90—the 52
nd-fastest mark in the nation this season.
Joey Souverein (4
th, 15:34.47),
Aakash Iyer (5
th, 15:35.82), and
Nick Pham (6
th, 15:36.75) finished in succession, while
Marco Cunningham placed eighth in 16:19.95.
In the 1,500 meters,
Olaf Dietz led four Hopkins runners to top-10 finishes, placing fourth with a time of 3:56.65, the 26
th-fastest in Division III this season.
Rowan Cassidy followed closely in fifth (3:56.98, 29
th nationally), while
Connor Oiler took eighth (3:58.69, 40
th nationally) and
Cedar Nichols-Barnhart finished ninth (4:01.56, 69
th nationally).
Henry Zhe-Heimerman and
Vaughn Decker added top-10 performances in the steeplechase, placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Zhe-Heimerman clocked a 9:55.65 (57
th nationally), while Decker finished in 10:18.70.
In the sprints,
Josh Lee and
Michael Long each earned top-10 finishes in the 400 meters, placing fifth (50.57) and ninth (52.34), respectively.
Tyler Caswell added a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.82, which ranks 10
th in program history and 50
th nationally this season.
Alex Colletti delivered a standout performance in the 200-meter dash, finishing second in 21.36. The time would have set a school record, but a wind reading of +2.5 prevented it from qualifying.
Hopkins also recorded strong results in the relays, earning top-10 finishes in both the 4x100 and 4x400-meter events. The 4x100 team of Lee,
Carter Chui, Colletti and
Chance Simpson posted a time of 44.30, ranking 85
th nationally this season. In the 4x400 relay,
Matteo O'Malley,
Samson Dessalines, Long and Lee placed fifth with a time of 3:26.49, the 39
th-fastest in Division III.
In the field events,
Ryan Braga and
Alexander Yeon turned in two of the top hammer throw marks in program history. Braga recorded the third-best throw in school history at 43.73 meters, while Yeon's 40.42-meter effort ranks fifth all-time. Braga also placed in the top 10 in the discus, finishing with a throw of 42.64 meters (84
th nationally).
Sebastian Tangelson led a trio of Blue Jays in the javelin with a fifth-place finish (48.07m), followed by
Owen Takahashi in eighth (42.24m) and
Luke DeBaugh in ninth (39.10m).
In the long jump,
Oluwademilade Adeniran (6.35m) and
Alexander Williams (5.90m) placed eighth and ninth, respectively.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, April 3, at the Dalton Ebanks Invitational hosted by George Mason University.
