BALTIMORE, MD – The No. 4/5 Johns Hopkins baseball team dropped just their second game of the season Wednesday afternoon, falling 9-6 to Mary Washington (5-2) at Babb Field at Stromberg Stadium. Hopkins falls to 6-2 on the year after bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth before back-to-back strikeouts ended the comeback attempt.
Making his second start of the season,
William Jaun turned in a solid outing, earning a no-decision after tossing 5.0 innings while allowing three runs on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Despite the strong start, the Blue Jay offense was unable to generate enough early support.
Mary Washington struck first with a run in the top of the first inning and used small ball to manufacture another in the third to take a 2-0 lead. Hopkins answered in the bottom half of the frame as reigning Centennial Conference Player of the Week and
D3Baseball.com Team of the Week selection
Jacob Harris launched a two-run home run to right field to even the score at 2-2.
The tie didn't last long, as Oliver Martin gave the Eagles the lead right back with a solo homer to left field, putting Mary Washington ahead 3-2.
Hopkins responded again in the fifth.
Clay Hartje, also a recent
D3Baseball.com Team of the Week selection, blooped an RBI single into center field to score
Alex Shane and tie the game at 3-3. Later in the inning,
Luke Baker put a ball in play that resulted in an Eagle error, allowing Hartje to score and give the Blue Jays their first lead of the game at 4-3.
The Eagles swung the momentum in the seventh inning. After
Charles Monterrosa recorded the first two outs, he ran into trouble and
Cole Jefferson entered in relief. A hit batter followed by consecutive hits allowed Mary Washington to plate four runs and take a 7-4 lead.
Hopkins responded with a run in the bottom of the inning when
Logan Scully lined an RBI double to right field, scoring Shane and cutting the deficit to 7-5.
Mary Washington added two more runs in the eighth to extend its lead to 9-5, but the Blue Jays again answered when
Damian Brown hit a solo home run to trim the margin to 9-6.
After a scoreless top of the ninth, Hopkins mounted one last push. Hartje singled and Baker walked to put the tying run at the plate with one out, but the Eagles closed the door with back-to-back strikeouts to secure the win.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 7, when it hosts Cortland at Babb Field at Stromberg Stadium for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
