FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Johns Hopkins dropped a 4-2 decision to ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon in the finals of the Mary Washington Invitational. The Blue Jays fall to 10-5 and see their four-match win streak snapped while the Tartans improve to 13-2.
Carnegie Mellon took the early lead in the match after picking up wins at one and two doubles. Alex Feies and Brendan Hendrata took the first win of the match with a 6-3 win over
Allen Gong and
Chakor Rajendra.
Dylan Blenkiron and
Brian Yi answered at three with a 6-4 win over Daniel Kong and Takeshi Koey. The doubles' point came down to court two and the Tartans' Akshay Joshi and Ian Miller grabbed the point in a hard-fought 7-6 (7) win over
Mukundh Boopathi and
Pranav Gadiraju.
Miller pushed CMU's lead to 2-0 when he won 6-0, 6-4 versus Boopathi at four singles. Feis then made it a 3-0. Match with a 7-6 (1), 6-0 win over Blenkiron at one. Rajendra got one back for the Blue Jays, and earned his 100
th career win, when he beat Hendrata 6-3, 6-2 at three. Gong then pulled JHU back within one with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Koey at two. Kong clinched the win for Carnegie Mellon with a three-set win over
Jason Li at five.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 15 versus 40
th-ranked NC Wesleyan. The match is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start at the JHU Tennis Courts.
Notes: Rajendra is the second player to reach 100 career wins this season, joining Gong.
