LANCASTER, PA – Johns Hopkins seniors
Erika Ezumba and
Connor Oiler, along with the women's 4x800-meter relay squad, have been named Centennial Conference Track & Field Athletes of the Week following standout performances at the Penn Relays. The honor marks the second conference recognition this season for Ezumba and
Mackenzie Setton, and the first for
Ani Wedemeyer,
Emma Kothari,
Diana Valentini and Oiler.
Ezumba opened competition for the Blue Jays with a dominant showing in the hammer throw, delivering one of the top performances of the meet. Competing primarily against Division I athletes, she captured the event title with a personal-best toss of 58.77 meters. The mark sets new Hopkins and Conference records and currently ranks first in Division III this season.
On the final day of the Penn Relays, the quartet of Wedemeyer, Kothari, Valentini and Setton turned in an extraordinary performance in the 4x800-meter relay. The group placed third in 8:49.79, finishing behind only Navy, which won the event, and Yale.
Their time is the fastest in the nation this season and ranks second in both program history and Division III history. The only faster mark came from last year's Johns Hopkins squad of Kothari, Setton,
Harrinee Senthilkumar and
Annie Huang, which set the Division III record at the 129
th Penn Relays.
On the men's side, Oiler delivered a strong performance in the steeplechase, finishing 17
th with a personal-best time of 8:53.87. His mark sets a new program record and ranks fifth in Division III this season, third in Centennial Conference history and 32
nd in Division III history.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, May 1, at the Centennial Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Gettysburg College. The women will look to defend their title and secure the program's 16
th consecutive conference championship, while the men aim for their second straight title.
