FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Johns Hopkins grabbed come-from-behind wins at two and four singles to rally for a 4-3 win over host and 13
th-ranked Mary Washington Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays end the regular season with a 15-6 record, while the Eagles slip to 18-6.
Mary Washington took the early 1-0 lead as the Eagles swept the doubles' matches. Asher Willenborg and Trevor Rein won 6-3 at one doubles over
Allen Gong and
Chakor Rajendra. William Fromherz and Ryan Gipner won by the same score versus
Dylan Blenkiron and
Brian Yi at three. Evan Fisher and John Riordan completed the sweep with a tight 7-6 (9) win at three over
Pranav Gadiraju and
Mukundh Boopathi.
Hopkins quickly answered in singles with wins at five and six to take a 2-1 lead. Boopathi won 6-2, 6-1 over Ryan Battaglia at five and
Joshua Kim beat Cooper Lehman 6-1, 6-2 at six. UMW answered with wins at three and one to go back up 3-2. Riordan tied the match at two when he won a close 7-5, 6-4 match over Rajendra at three. Willenborg then put the Eagles back on top with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Gong at one.
The Blue Jays needed to win each of the last two matches, in which they were each down a set. Blenkiron and
Jason Li did just that. Blenkiron dropped his first set 6-2 but rallied with 6-4 wins in two and three to beat Rein at two singles. That tied the match at three and all eyes turned to court four. Gipner had won the first set 6-3, but Li won two and three by the same 6-2 score to take the match and the win for the Blue Jays.
Hopkins will now await a possible at-large berth to the 2026 NCAA Tournament. The bracket is set to be announced on Monday, May 4 at 12:30 pm.
