Johns Hopkins Drops Heartbreaker to #8 Carnegie Mellon, 4-3

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon in the NCAA Sweet 16 Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays end their season at 13-7, while the Tartans improve to 19-7.
 
Hopkins grabbed wins at one and two doubles to secure the doubles' point and take a 1-0 lead into singles. Ava Li and Kamila Wong started the Blue Jays off with a 6-3 win over Kotistha Modak and Ika Kanumuri at one. Lia Melvin and Sophia Kim then clinched the point when they beat Divya Venkatarama and Ancele Dolensek, 6-2.
 
Sahana Madala dropped just two games in her win over Dolsensek at six singles, pushing JHU's lead to 2-0. Kanumuri answered with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kim at one and it was a 2-1 match. Sahana Sanjeev answered with a 7-6 (0), 6-1 win at five over Victoria Gazda to put Hopkins on top 3-1.
 
The Tartans come back started on four where Shelly Zinchenko took a three-setter over Li. Jane Wong then did the same at two singles, winning over Melvin to tie the match at three. All eyes turned to court three and it was Modak who grabbed the win in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, to send Carnegie Mellon to the quarterfinals.
 
Li, Wong and Melvin's seasons will continue at the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships on May 22.
