BOYERTOWN, PA - DeSales University jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and held off a ninth-inning rally to defeat Johns Hopkins, 3-2, Saturday evening in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Tournament at Bear Stadium.

DeSales jumped out to a 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Lew Campanaro singled to lead off the inning, then stole second base and scored on a single by Brett Vargo. Vargo advanced to second on the throw to the plate and to third on a groundout before scoring on a double down the left field line from Blake Boyer. The Bulldogs added a single run in the fifth as Campanaro walked, stole second and third base, and scored as Vargo grounded out to second base.
The Blue Jays mounted a rally in the top of the ninth. With two outs, senior Mike DePalma (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) singled up the middle, then stole second base. DePalma scored one batter later to make the score 3-1 as senior Ben Taylor (Pawling, NY/Trinity-Pawling) reached on an error by the second baseman.
Sophomore Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) followed with a line drive up the middle to give JHU runners on first and second. Junior Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) then ripped a single down the left field line to score Taylor and advance Cetta to third. But, DeSales was able to hold on for the win as Ryan Lindley was able to force a pop up to end the game.
Lindley earned his eighth save of the year for the Bulldogs in relief of starter Bret Remel, who improved to 6-2 as he held JHU to two unearned runs and five hits in 8.2 innings. Sophomore Russ Berger (Owings, Mills, MD/Owings Mills) took the loss for Hopkins to fall to 4-2 for the year. He allowed three runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work.
