Baltimore, MD - The Johns Hopkins field hockey team scored two goals in the final 2:40 to post a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Juniata in its home opener Saturday night at Homewood Field.
The Blue Jays trailed 1-0 before senior forward Jenny Farrelly (Clinton Township, NJ/North Hunterdon) scored an unassisted goal with 2:40 remaining to tie the contest, and with 1:30 left Hopkins earned a penalty corner. Farrelly fed senior forward Kelly Hewitt (Stafford, VA/Springfield Township-PA), who pushed a pass to senior midfielder Ashlee Duncan (Easton, MD/Easton). Duncan blasted a shot that deflected off an Eagle defender and into the goal to give the Blue Jays the lead, and Juniata could not get a shot off in the final minute and a half.
After a scoreless first half, Eagle junior Jean Silvey scored a penalty stroke goal with 8:02 remaining in the game to put Juniata ahead.
Hopkins sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Shifman (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) made five saves while sophomore midfielder Meighan Roose (Baltimore, MD/York-ME) recorded a defensive save, her third of the season. Melonie Sappe' stopped six shots for Juniata.
The Blue Jays improved to 1-1 with the victory, while the Eagles fell to 2-2.
Hopkins returns to action on Thursday when the Blue Jays travel to the College of New Jersey for a 7:30 p.m. game.
