CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (www.virginiasports.com) - Sophomore Foster Gilbert scored his first two goals in more than a year, including one 1:17 into overtime, to send Virginia to a 9-8 win over top-ranked Johns Hopkins this evening at Kl?ckner Stadium.

The Cavaliers, who defeated Towson by the very same 9-8 score in overtime last Sunday, improve to 3-4 on the season with their second win in a row. Johns Hopkins lost for the first time this spring, falling to 5-1 overall.

The game was a seesaw battle throughout and featured seven ties and four lead changes as neither team was able to build a lead of more than two goals.

Sophomore Kyle Dixon notched Virginia's first two goals to put the Cavaliers up 2-0 midway through the opening quarter, but the Blue Jays forged the first tie late in the quarter behind goals from Kevin Boland and Joe McDermott.

Junior Peter LeSueur added the Jays' third goal in a row early in the second quarter for the first lead change. UVa midfielder Newton Gentry scored for the third game in a row less than six minutes before halftime to send the teams to the locker room tied at three.

Joe Yevoli scored twice in the third quarter, but the visitors from Baltimore answered both times. Cavalier attackman Matt Ward, the team's leading scorer coming in, scored his only goal of the game by taking a pass in front from Jared Little and beating goalie Scott Smith for a 6-5 Virginia lead going into the fourth.

Johns Hopkins gained some separation early in the fourth quarter with three consecutive goals by LeSueur, Kyle Dowd and Kevin Boland.

Gilbert brought the Cavaliers within one with his first goal of the season with 9:52 left in regulation. Matt Poskay knotted the score for the seventh time with 2:20 on the clock.

LSM Corey Harned had the best chance at a game-winner for the Blue Jays, but his shot in an unsettled situation was saved by Dixon in the crease with 40.9 seconds remaining. Conor Ford scooped up the loose ball, but his shot was wide with Virginia backing up. Down a man the Cavaliers turned the ball over with 20.9 seconds to go, but the Blue Jays were unable to get a shot off in the final seconds.

Cavalier goalie Tillman Johnson came up with the first big play in overtime by saving Conor Ford's bid on the crease for his eighth save of the game 47 seconds into the extra period.

Once past the midline, the Cavaliers called timeout with 3:07 to go. Gilbert-playing behind-netted the winner by beating Smith off the left pipe high to give UVa its sixth win in the last seven games vs. the Blue Jays.

The Cavaliers defense was outstanding, holding the Blue Jays to their lowest score this season. Virginia also was able to kill six man-down opportunities. In the last three games, Virginia's opponents are 0 of 20 in extra-man opportunities.

Dixon, Gilbert and Yevoli each tallied twice for Virginia, while Gentry, Poskay and Ward each notched one goal. Boland and LeSueur scored twice for Hopkins, while Dowd, Kyle Harrison, McDermott and Rewkowski added one apiece.

Virginia travels to Maryland next Saturday for face the Terrapins at 1:00 pm at Byrd Stadium. Johns Hopkins returns to Homewood to host North Carolina at 1:00 pm.
