Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins senior righthander Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) allowed just five hits and one run while striking out 11 in a complete game victory as the top-ranked Blue Jays defeated Catholic, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when junior Mike Durgala (Annadale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) led off the frame with a single. With one out senior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) hit a dribbler down the third base line and beat out pitcher Daniel Conway's throw to first, which got away from first baseman Timothy Bottomly to allow Durgala to advance to third. Junior Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) followed with a single to left to score Durgala with the first run of the game.
The Blue Jays held their one-run lead until the bottom of the seventh, when sophomore Corey Gleason (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) led off with a double down the leftfield line. Gleason was on third with two outs when senior Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) hit a ground ball to Catholic shortstop Andrew Carnevale, and Gleason scored when Carnevale's throw to first was low and could not be scooped by Bottomly.
Hopkins added an insurance run in the eighth when Cetta led off with a double to right center, advanced to third on a groundout by Spiciarich and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gleason.
Pedro Rivera spoiled Brown's shutout bid with a solo home run with two outs in the ninth, but after Joe Verga walked Brown got Bottomly to hit into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Gleason finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in, while Cetta was also 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Blue Jays. Rivera went 3-for-4 for Catholic, which fell to 21-14-1 on the season. Conway allowed two earned runs on seven hits in 7.2 innings pitched to fall to 2-2 on the year.
The Blue Jays, who improved to 31-0, will travel to Allentown, PA, Saturday for a Centennial Conference doubleheader with Muhlenberg beginning at 1 p.m.
