Boytertown, PA - Rowan lefthander Josh Schwartz threw a complete game shutout as the Profs defeated top-ranked Johns Hopkins, 6-0, Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional at Bear Stadium.
The top-seeded Blue Jays, who fell to 39-3, will face the winner of the 3 p.m. game between DeSales and Arcadia Saturday at 7 p.m. The Profs improved to 39-6 and move into Sunday's championship.
Rowan took the lead in the bottom of the first as Bryan Ciconte led off with a single up the middle and one out later Irv McFarland drilled a two-run homer to leftfield.
The Blue Jays, who were not retired in order during the game, had their best scoring opportunity in the top of the seventh. Senior designated hitter Brian Morley (Tappan, NY/Don Bosco Prep) led off with a single to left but was erased when senior leftfielder Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) bounced into a fielder's choice.
Junior third baseman Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) followed with a single to left, but senior shortstop Carl Ippolito (Ewing, NJ/Pennington School) grounded out to third and Schwartz struck out senior catcher Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) looking to end the threat.
Rowan then put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the eighth off Hopkins junior starter Ryan McConnell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor).
McFarland laced an RBI single to left, Matt Enuco posted a run-scoring single up the middle and Brent Dempsey capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center.
Schwartz scattered nine hits while striking out six and walking just one to improve to 12-0 on the year. McConnell, who fell to 7-1, gave up six runs, four earned, on seven hits while striking out three.
Morley and senior rightfielder Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) led the Blue Jay attack with two hits apiece.
