CARY, NC -- The Johns Hopkins women's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to four games with a 3-1 victory over Christopher Newport on the first day of the Esprit Division III Tournament Saturday afternoon. JHU improves to 3-1-1 on the year, while the Captains slip to 1-2-2.
Hopkins jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute when sophomore Kaitlin Giannetti (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) scored her second goal of the season off an assist from senior Kathleen Turley (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park). The assist was Turley's team-leading third of the season. In a game where shots were hard to come by, neither team would score for the remainder of the first half.
The Blue Jays broke through again early in the second half when freshman Cassandra Vogel (Laurel Hollow, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) netted her third goal of the season in the 49th minute. Junior Meg McIntosh (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood) picked up the assist on the play for JHU. The Captains needed just three minutes to pull within one as Morgan Young's header off a cross from Leigh Leavitt cut the deficit in half.
Sophomore Laurie Baumann (Milford, MI/Greenmills School) gave the Blue Jays an insurance goal five minutes after Young's goal as freshman Kim Lane (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) sent her in alone on goal with a beautiful lead pass and Baumann easily beat CNU goalie Lindsay Naill for her second goal of the season.
Jen Goebel (Jericho, NY/Jericho) once again went the distance in goal for the Blue Jays as she registered three saves. Naill had four saves in goal for the Captains, who were outshot, 7-4.
