Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Caite Kappel scored one goal and added an assist to help the Johns Hopkins field hockey team defeat Muhlenberg 4-3 at Homewood Field on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays led 2-0 in the first half and wrestled off a late-game rally by the Mules to clinch their first Centennial Conference win of the year. Hopkins improved to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while Muhlenberg fell to 6-5, 1-2 CC.

The Blue Jays struck first at 6:20, when senior Meighan Roose set up Kappel immediately in front of the Muhlenberg goal. Kappel beat her defender one-on-one and fired a shot past the Mules' keeper, junior Lauren Schram, for her second goal of the year and the 1-0 Johns Hopkins lead. The Jays made it 2-0 when junior Amy Soergel put the finishing touch on a penalty corner play.

Muhlenberg finally got on the board with 4:15 remaining in the first half, as sophomore Jillian Duffy found the loose ball in a scramble in front of the net and scored unassisted. Johns Hopkins led 2-1 and had a 7-3 advantage on shots at the break.

Freshman Leah Horton wasted little time in boosting Hopkins' lead to 3-1 with her first career goal at 37:29. On a penalty corner, sophomore Sarah Bender fired a pass to Kappel, who redirected the ball to Horton for the score.

But Muhlenberg answered, never letting the Blue Jays score consecutive goals for the rest of the game. Sophomore Kelly Shetron assisted junior Jessica Hand at 50:30 to bring the Mules within one, 3-2.

Just three minutes later, Hopkins' senior Kristan Lione set up junior Leah Dudley for a lob shot over Schram, increasing the Blue Jay lead to two goals once again. The Mules countered with Duffy's second goal of the game, assisted by sophomore Lauren Rutt at 65:47. Johns Hopkins led by just one goal, 4-3, with just over four minutes to play.

Muhlenberg had the ideal opportunity to tie the game when it earned a penalty stroke with 3:18 remaining. Senior Steph Light took the open shot on Johns Hopkins junior Dayna Eng, but Eng made the biggest save of her season to preserve the one-goal lead for the Blue Jays. Hopkins successfully stalled for the final two minutes to grasp the 4-3 win.

Johns Hopkins finished with a 14-8 lead on shots, while Muhlenberg held a 13-11 advantage on corners. Eng made four saves in 70 minutes for the Blue Jays, and Schram finished with three for the Mules. Freshman Michelle Consiglio played the second half in goal for Muhlenberg and had four saves.

The Blue Jays are now 11-3 all-time against the Mules. They host another Centennial Conference game this Tuesday, October 1, when Swarthmore visits Homewood Field at 7 pm.
