BALTIMORE, MD - After playing 110 minutes to its second tie with the Blue Jays this season, Gettysburg edged Johns Hopkins 5-4 in penalty kicks at Homewood Field to advance to the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Men's Soccer Championship tournament. The first-round conference game was tied at one at the end of two overtime periods before the #5 seed Bullets outlasted the #4 seed Blue Jays in six penalty kicks each.

Johns Hopkins (11-2-5, 5-1-3 CC) has a chance to continue its season if selected for the ECAC Championships, while Gettysburg (7-6-5, 4-2-3 CC) now meets McDaniel in Westminster, Maryland, this Saturday, November 5, at 11:30 am. The other conference semifinal game features #2 Swarthmore and #3 Muhlenberg and is scheduled for Saturday at 1:30 pm.

Hopkins controlled today's game in regulation, finishing the 90 minutes with a 20-6 lead on shots and a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks. But like the teams' first meeting this year that ended in a scoreless tie, neither team managed a goal in the first half. The Blue Jays led 8-2 on shots and 5-1 on corners at the break.

Gettysburg got on the scoreboard at 72:22 when Johns Hopkins was called for a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick for junior Garrett Bruno. The midfielder converted, and the Bullets led 1-0 with less than 18 minutes remaining.

Hopkins answered quickly as freshman Nicholas Gauna scored his team-high eighth goal of the year at 76:33. He rebounded a deflected shot by senior Jeff Grosser and fired it past Gettysburg senior Nick Wells-Bundtzen for the game-tying goal. Neither team scored in the final 13 minutes as the teams entered overtime for the second time against each other this year.

The extra 20 minutes were more of the same, as Hopkins led 4-2 on shots but could not manage a score. Wells-Bundtzen finished with nine saves, while Johns Hopkins junior Dan Coble made three saves. The Blue Jays ended the 110 minutes with a 24-6 lead on shots and an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks.

In penalty kicks, both teams converted their first two on high right shots before Gettysburg opened the door for Hopkins with a miss. Freshman Ian Forster's kick hit the crossbar, but the Blue Jays missed their opportunity to take the lead as Wells-Bundtzen stopped senior Manbaj Gill's low shot to the left. Both teams converted their final two kicks to end the round of five tied at four.

The teams next went shot-for-shot in sudden death, and Gettysburg sophomore Brad Tabor started it off with a good kick into the bottom left corner of the goal. Wells-Bundtzen preserved the lead by stopping Gauna's shot up the middle, advancing Gettysburg past Johns Hopkins in the first round of the Centennial Conference tournament.
