Thayer Picks Up Win as JHU Drops Heidelberg, 10-2

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL -

Junior Jason Thayer (Finksburg, MD/Westminster) allowed only six hits and two runs in eight innings, as the Johns Hopkins baseball team defeated Heidelberg 10-2 in baseball action this afternoon in Port Charlotte, FL.

Thayer was aided by two separate two-run home runs that gave the Blue Jays a 4-0 advantage. Junior Corey Gleason (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) blasted his first home run of the season in the second inning to plate senior Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) to give JHU a 2-0 lead. In the sixth, Durgala sent a ball way over the left-centerfield fence to drive in senior Paul Wintelring (Glenelg, MD/McDonough) who had reached via a walk, and give the Blue Jays a 4-0 lead.

The Blue Jays sealed the victory in the top of the eighth inning as they strung together seven hits en route to six runs.

Thayer, making his first start of the year, threw eight strong innings, striking out four, yielding no walks and allowing only two runs, as he picked up the win.

Durgala remained hot at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.He is currently batting .550 in six games played. Gleason was also 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.

The 10 runs runs scored marks the fifth consecutive game that the Blue Jays have scored at least 10 runs. With the win JHU improves to 5-1, while Heidelberg falls to 2-2. The Blue Jays will take on William Patterson Thursday in a doubleheader beginning at 10:30 am at Jack Russell Stadium.
