Box Score

LAKELAND, FL -

Sophomore Rob Sanzillo (Katonah, NY/Somers) squeezed home senior Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) in the top of the ninth inning to give the Blue Jays a 4-3 lead over William Paterson. Senior Ryan McConnell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) threw a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the save, as the Blue Jays picked up the 4-3 win to improve to 6-1 on the year.

With the score tied 3-3 in the top of the ninth inning, Spiciarich led off the inning by lacing the first pitch of the inning down the left field line for a double. Pinch hitter junior Matt Scally (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) successfully bunted Spiciarich to third, to bring up Sanzillo. Sanzillo laid down a squeeze bunt with two strikes, and Spiciarich slid around the tag of the William Paterson catcher to give the Blue Jays the one run lead.

Each team scored a run in the first inning, and the Blue Jays took a 2-1 lead in the third inning as senior Paul Wintelring (Glenelg, MD/McDonough) drove home Sanzillo who had led off the inning with a single. Blue Jay starter sophomore Ryan Lanpher (York, PA/Clavert Hall) made the 2-1 lead hold until the Pioneers picked up an unearned run in the sixth inning to tie the game.

Neither team scored in the seventh, but senior Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) blasted a home run over the right field fence with two outs in eighth to give the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead.

Brian Gelalia led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a walk, for William Paterson. He then advanced to third as the Blue Jays failed to turn a double play on a ground ball. Blue Jay reliever junior Andrew Bail (Chicago, IL/Latin School) appeared to pitch the Blue Jays out of the jam as he struck out the next two batters, but pinch hitter Jeremy Winters flared a Bail offering into right field to tie the game. The Blue Jays then scored their run in the ninth to pick up the win.

Lanpher went seven strong innings, despite not factoring in the decision. He yielded only four hits and gave up two runs, only one of which was earned. Bail pitched the eighth picking up two strikeouts. McConnell retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up the save, his first of the year.

Spiciarch, Durgala and junior Bryce Baumann (Oklahoma City, OK/Cassidy School) all were 2-for-4 for JHU. Durgala's blast in the eighth was his third of the year, tying him with Spiciarich for the team lead. He also leads the Blue Jays with 10 runs batted in.

The Blue Jays will finish their Florida trip on Saturday when they take on Nichols on Saturday at 9 am at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater, FL.
