BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore Sarah Bender scored the game-tying goal and assisted the game-winner to lead the Johns Hopkins field hockey team to a 3-2 win over St. Mary's at Homewood Field on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improved to 3-3 this season, while the Seahawks fell to 2-3 overall.
St. Mary's jumped ahead early and led 2-1 at halftime before Johns Hopkins rallied. Sophomore Marianne Wood scored unassisted at 3:42 to put the Seahawks on the board first, but Johns Hopkins freshman Adair Landy tied the game at one with her third goal of the year, unassisted at 24:20.
The Seahawks regained their lead before the break, as senior Elizabeth McNichols tapped a pass to sophomore Alison Femi for a goal at 27:39. Johns Hopkins trailed 2-1 despite having a 9-6 advantage on shots and earning nine more penalty corners (10-1) than St. Mary's. Sophomore Emily Richards made eight first-half saves for the Seahawks.
In the second half, Johns Hopkins continued to dominate time of possession and to earn numerous scoring opportunities. A yellow card on a St. Mary's player with 28:36 remaining gave the Blue Jays a man-up advantage, but Hopkins failed to capitalize. It wasn't until the Seahawks were even again did the Blue Jays immediately manage to score.
On a Hopkins penalty corner at 55:01, freshman Leah Horton pushed the ball out to sophomore Lori Vislocky, who set it perfectly for Bender to fire a shot past the St. Mary's keeper. Bender's team-high fifth goal of the season tied the game at two with less than 15 minutes remaining.
The Blue Jays won the game by converting another penalty corner opportunity 3:45 later, with Horton, Vislocky, and Bender in on the play once again. After taking the corner, Horton positioned herself in front of the goal, where Bender found her for the game-winning goal. It was Horton's first goal of her career.
Johns Hopkins finished with a dominant lead on shots (14-8) and penalty corners (19-1). Richards made nine saves in goal for the Seahawks, while sophomore Dayna Eng finished with four in the win for Hopkins.
The all-time series between Hopkins and St. Mary's stands at 1-1, with the Seahawks winning 5-2 last season.
