BALTIMORE, MD - For the eighth straight time this decade, the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team did not allow McDaniel to score at Homewood Field. But this time, the Blue Jays were also scoreless as the in-state Centennial Conference rivals battled to a 0-0 tie on Wednesday night.
Johns Hopkins moved to 5-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference, while McDaniel left the field with a 4-2-1 overall record and 1-0-1 conference mark this year.
Both teams had early scoring opportunities, as the Blue Jays led McDaniel 6-3 in shots in first half. Senior Andrew Wu stopped all five of Johns Hopkins' five shots on goal, while junior Dan Coble made two saves on the other end. Hopkins also had the edge in corner kicks, 6-3.
The Blue Jays took three second-half shots and prevented McDaniel from taking a single shot in the second half, but Wu made two saves to keep them off the scoreboard.
At 97:54, with just over two minutes to play in the first extra period, senior Manbaj Gill sailed a shot inches high of the goal and that was as close as Hopkins would come. McDaniel had a scoring opportunity of its own in the second overtime period when senior Todd Knepper fired his second shot of the night directly into Coble's hands.
Johns Hopkins finished with a 14-5 lead on shots and 8-2 advantage on corner kicks. Wu and Coble earned shutouts with 11 and four saves, respectively.
