GENEVA, NY - Senior Maggie Dolan scored the game-winner off a between-the-legs shot in the 69th minute to help the William Smith field hockey team defeat the visiting Blue Jays 3-2 at McCooey Field. Johns Hopkins led 2-1 before the Herons scored two straight goals to pick up the win.
The Blue Jays fell to 1-2 with the loss, while the Herons, who finished last season 18-3 and ranked fifth in the nation, improved to 2-1.
Johns Hopkins out-shot William Smith 7-5 and led 4-1 in corners in the first half, but the Herons' keeper, senior Susan Jordan, made five first-half saves to keep the Blue Jays off the scoreboard. Despite 12 combined shots, the game was scoreless until the second half, when senior Lauren Fuller opened the Herons' scoring with a goal at 36:29. Fuller's second goal of the season came when junior Sophie Dennis set her up off a corner from senior Amy Kuzio.
Hopkins responded with sophomore Sarah Bender's third goal of the year, coming unassisted at 47:51. The Blue Jays held the Herons scoreless and pulled ahead nearly 20 minutes later, as sophomore Kristin Strief assisted junior Leah Dudley for a shot just inside the near post.
William Smith wasted little time before tying the game again, as Kuzio scored her first goal of the year off a pass from Dennis at 68:18. With the score knotted at two, William Smith junior Brooke Atwood attempted the game-winning goal but her shot was blocked by Hopkins freshman Leah Horton. Dolan gained possession off the blocked shot and found herself with her back to the goal with just under one minute to play. Dolan, who scored 13 goals last year, put in her second goal of the year and the game-winner by shooting between her legs and past Johns Hopkins goalkeeper, junior Dayna Eng.
The Blue Jays could not get a shot off in the final 59 seconds, as they dropped their second straight loss of the year. Eng and Jordan each finished with seven saves while playing all 70 minutes in goal, but the Herons out-shot the Blue Jays 15-6 in the second half and 20-13 overall. William Smith also finished with the edge in corners, 9-6.
The Blue Jays return to action next Saturday, September 10, for their first home game of the season. Hopkins hosts Washington and Lee at 5 p.m.
