CHESTERTOWN, MD - Junior Sarah Bender (Mattapoisett, MA/Tabor Academy) scored her second and third goals of the game on back-to-back possessions late in the second half to rally Johns Hopkins past Washington College, 3-2, in a Centennial Conference field hockey game Wednesday night. The Blue Jays improved to 10-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 2-11 and 2-6 with the loss. Hopkins has now won four straight and nine of its last 10. The Blue Jays are now alone in second place in the conference with 12 points after a Gettysburg loss tonight.

"They really jumped on us early and kind of knocked us back on our heels," said head coach Megan Callahan. "But thre girls responded and really found a way to win."

The Shorewomen quickly grabbed a 1-0 lead when Amy Spadanuta scored with 33:34 to play in the opening half. Washington extended the lead to 2-0 with 26:26 left in the first half as Molly Gavin scored off an assist from Ally Simons. Johns Hopkins cut the lead to one goal when Bender scored off a feed from sophomore Leah Horton (Wayne, PA/Upper Merion Area) with 10:48 to go in the half.

Bender tied the score at 2-2 when she scored off an assist from sophomore Adair Landy (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) with 7:59 left in the game. Bender then scored what would prove to be the game-winner just 23 seconds later off an assist from sophomore Emily Miller (Garden City, NY/Garden City). That assist extended Miller's point streak to six consecutive games and gives her 35 points on the season. That ties her with Ashlee Duncan and Jenny Farrelly for the fourth most points in a single season. Her 10 assists also ranks as the fourth most in a single season.

Senior goalie Dayna Eng (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) made eight saves for the Blue Jays, while Elena Nicholoff made nine stops for Washington. Eng currently ranks sixth in Hopkins history with 274 career saves, she is now just nine saves shy of tying fifth-ranked Missi Schafhauser (1999-02).

Johns Hopkins held a 17-12 advantage in shots and a 12-6 edge in penalty corners in the game. The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, October 21 as they host the Bryn Mawr Owls. Game time at Homewood Field is set for 6:00 p.m. Live stats will be available on HopkinsSports.com.
