BALTIMORE, MD - The #8 Johns Hopkins men's tennis team rolled over Gettysburg College Wednesday afternoon, winning every match for a 7-0 win. The Blue Jays improve to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in Centennial Conference action. The Bullets fall to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in league play.
Hopkins opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Matt Naftilan (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) and Kevin Ma (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) paired for their second consecutive win, 8-0 at third doubles. The pair beat Patrick Dempsey and Matt Salter. At second doubles, sophomore Rafi Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) and junior Nick Kennedy (Tucson, AZ/Deerfield Academy) combined for an 8-4 win over Thane Schweyer and Kyle Naylor. And at first doubles, sophomore Joe Vasoontara (Bangok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee) and junior Hillen Smith (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin), ranked eighth in the Atlantic South, won their fifth match of the season. The duo beat Hans Hardisty and Derin Wilson 8-5.
In singles play, the Blue Jays swept all six matches in straight sets to complete a 7-0 win. Vasoontara, ranked 19th in the region, defeated Hardisty at first singles 6-1, 6-3. At second singles, Smith improved to 5-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Wilson. Roberti swept Schweyer 6-0, 6-0 at third singles to improve his record to 5-1. Ma also improved to 5-1 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Mike Leary at fourth singles. Naftilan moved to 3-2 at fifth singles, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Salter. And at sixth singles, freshman Larry Wei (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) beat Naylor 6-2, 6-2 to improve to 2-0.
Hopkins returns to action on Thursday, April 13 when the Blue Jays travel to Westminster to face McDaniel College. The Centennial Conference match is set to begin at 3:30 pm.
