WINCHESTER, VA - Senior designated hitter Adam Kuchemba's single to center field with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning lifted Shenandoah to an 8-7 win over Johns Hopkins in non-conference college baseball at Bridgeforth Field Wednesday night.
With two away in the inning, the 12th-ranked (ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Blue Jays intentionally walked junior left fielder Ryan Anderson, who was 2-for-4. Kuchemba, the next batter, made the Blue Jays pay with a line drive to short center field, his third RBI in a 4-for-6 performance.
In a game that featured four lead changes and three ties, the Hornets grabbed a 6-4 lead in the fifth, going ahead on a two-out triple to right field by Anderson. Anderson came home on Kuchemba's single through the left side, pushing Shenandoah to a two-run advantage.
The Blue Jays got back a run in the sixth on sophomore shortstop Nathan Adelman's RBI and another in the seventh on junior second baseman Ian Christie's first career homer, tying the game at six. Shenandoah got its lead back when Kuchemba, who tripled his way on, was balked home from third base.
In the top of the eighth, Hopkins sent the game to extras when senior pinch runner Tim Sliker, who stole second base to move into scoring position, came to plate on Adelman's second RBI of the night, a single through the right side, tying the game at seven.
Adelman and senior right fielder Gary Rosenberg both finished the evening 3-for-5 for the Blue Jays.
Hopkins senior right-hander Tim Denning worked his longest outing of the season, lasting five innings while allowing four Hornet hits and three earned runs.
Shenandoah right-handed reliever Nick Sborz (3-0) picked up the win, allowing one run on three hits over four innings. Hopkins sophomore right hander Paul Martone (0-1) suffered the loss, working two-and-a-third innings.
The Blue Jays suffered their first loss in six games, falling to 23-5-2. Hopkins returns to action on Friday at Gettysburg.
