COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team, ranked #8 in the Atlantic South, defeated the Ursinus Bears 6-0 on Friday, April 21. The win kicked off a weekend in which the Blue Jays shutout Dickinson (7-0) on Saturday and Muhlenberg (7-0) on Sunday.
The doubles matches were not played as the Blue Jays were late arriving at the match in Collegeville. That did not seem to hinder Hopkins' performance at all as the Jays swept all six singles matches. Sophomore Joe Vasoontara (Bangok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee), ranked #19 in region, defeated Ben Isser at first singles by the score 8-3. Junior Hillen Smith (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) won over Jason Brown 8-0 at second singles. Sophomore Matt Naftilan (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) also won by the score 8-0, beating Ryan Metcalf at third singles. Senior Justin Lee (Belle Meade, NJ/Montgomery) won at fourth singles, beating Joseph Ellwood 8-1. At fifth singles, freshman Dietrich Schlueter (Berkeley, CA/The College Prepartory School) defeated Carl Smith 8-4. And at sixth singles, sophomore Jeff Yu (Foster City, CA/San Mateo High School) beat Tim Seibert 8-3.
Next up for Hopkins is Mary Washington. The Jays visit the Eagles in Fredericksburg, VA on Thursday, April 27 for a 1:00 pm non-conference match.
