Final Stats

CHESTERTOWN, MD - Johns Hopkins took advantage of fielding mistakes and enjoyed nine solid innings of pitching to sweep a Centennial Conference baseball series from Washington College with a 18-3 win at Athey Field on Friday afternoon.

In similar fashion to Tuesday's series opener, the 21st-ranked (ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper) Blue Jays jumped ahead 5-0 after the first inning by scoring four unearned runs. With two outs and three runs already in, senior right fielder Gary Rosenberg and senior center fielder Matt Scally singled in Blue Jay base runners to push the early lead to five.

After going scoreless in the next two frames, Hopkins exploded for six more in the fourth and four in the fifth, with two more crossing the plate unearned. After Scally reached on an error and sophomore first baseman Matt Benchener doubled his way on, senior left fielder Bryce Baumann sent a frozen rope over the right field fence for a three-run shot, giving Hopkins a 14-1 lead. The homer was the first of Baumann's career.

For the afternoon, the Blue Jays scored seven runs of the unearned variety, as the Shoremen committed six errors.

Sound pitching made the lead stand, as sophomore Ryan Kuhlman (3-0) yielded six hits and no earned runs over six innings while striking out six. Right-handers Paul Martone, Tim Denning and Jon Anderson retired the last seven Shoremen in order to polish off the win.

In the seventh, another Blue Jay hit his first career long ball, as junior pinch-hitter Marcello Cavallaro lifted an offering over the fence in left center.

Hopkins had four players collect multi-hit days, led by senior second baseman Corey Gleason's 3-for-4 effort. Gleason also knocked in a pair of runs and crossed the plate twice.

Junior left fielder Zachary Huba was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Shoremen, including a fifth-inning RBI double. Senior shortstop Mike Parton clubbed a solo homer, his first of the year, in the seventh.

The win runs Hopkins' unbeaten streak to 11 in a row and improves the Blue Jays' record to 17-3-2 overall (5-0-1, Centennial). Washington College drops to 6-15 and 1-5 in the league.
