BALTIMORE, MD - For the second consecutive game, the Johns Hopkins field hockey team (1-4) faced a top-five opponent at home. Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field, the Blue Jays suffered a 5-1 loss to The College of New Jersey (4-0).
Jess Berkowitz got the scoring going early for the Lions, with the first of her two on the afternoon. Katie Reuther's shot was deflected by the defense and Berkowitz scored off the loose ball just 1:37 into the game. Less than four minutes later, the visitors held a 2-0 lead. Berkowitz took a penalty corner for TCNJ, sending the ball out to Sheri Grondski. She fired off a shot from the top of the circle to make it 2-0.
Hopkins responded at the 8:07 mark to cut the Lions' lead to just one. Off a penalty corner, junior Sarah Bender's (Mattapoisett, MA/Tabor Academy) shot was blocked by Lions' goalie Erin Mitschke. Senior Jamie Zubrow (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) collected the loose ball and passed it back to Bender who fired it towards the left post for her third goal of the season. In the closing minutes of the first half, Gronski and Berkowitz connected again on a penalty corner to push TCNJ's lead back up to two.
The Lions came out firing to start the second half and pushed their lead to 4-1 just 1:13 in. Jessica Falcone received the ball and dribbled in towards the right side of the goal, drawing the defense towards her. She passed the ball to her left to Berkowitz who shot it into the left corner. Allison Greene added a goal just three and a half minutes later to make it a 5-1 game. Hopkins did not give up, getting off 11 shots and earning six penalty corners in the second half, but Mitschke came up big for the Lions with nine saves in the half.
Senior goalie Dayna Eng (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) finished with 12 saves in the loss. Mitschke finished with 11 saves in the game. TCNJ held the advantage in shots (21-17) and penalty corners (11-9). The Blue Jays return to action on Tuesday, September 19 against the College of Notre Dame (MD). Game time at Homewood Field is set for 5:00 p.m.
