LEXINGTON, VA - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team placed second at the eight team Washington & Lee Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Jays captured three individual titles on the day at 141, 194 and 197 pounds.
The team title was won by Muhlenberg who finished with 86 points. The Blue Jays had 77.5 points to finish two points ahead of host, Washington & Lee who completed the day with 75.5 points. Scranton and Washington & Jefferson rounded out the top five with 47.5 and 35.5 points respectively.
Senior Marco Priolo got the Blue Jays off to a good start at 141-pounds. Priolo opened with a pin over Adam Hockensmith of Washington & Lee in 4:29. He followed that up with another pin, this time over Colin Gibson of Muhlenberg in :59 seconds. Priolo claimed the championship with a 6-2 decision over Rob Terrin of Washington & Lee.
Eric Fishel turned in a solid performance for the Blue Jays at 184-pounds. Fishel got a bye through the first round of competition. He then recorded a pin over Dylan Mercer of Washington and Jefferson in 1:39. He captured the title at 184 with a 7-4 decision over Matt Horn of Muhlenberg.
Tyler Schmidt gave the Blue Jays their third title of the day at 197-pounds. Schmidt started with a 10-2 major decision against Jon Brown of Washington & Lee. He recorded his second major decision of the day, 11-2 versus Brandon Miller of Waynesburg. Schmidt clinched the title with a forfeit victory over Matt Loesch of Muhlenberg.
Jim Crumlish finished second at 157-pounds on Saturday. Crumlish started his action with a default by Brian Saval of Muhlenberg. He followed that up with a 5-4 decision over Peter Lawrence of Washington & Lee. Crumlish dropped a 6-5 decision to Peter Rose of Southern Virginia to take second.
Vincent Domestico had a solid day at 285-pounds for the Blue Jays. He opened with a pin in 1:25 over Adam Welker of Southern Virgina. Domestico dropped a 7-3 decision to Andrew Crawford of Muhlenberg. He picked up a 5-2 decision over Josh Brewer of Washington and Jefferson to advance to the third place match. Domestico picked up a 2-1 decision over Neil Slocum of Scranton.
The Blue Jays return to the mat on Saturday, January 20th as the team will face Muhlenberg and Ursinus in Centennial Conference action.
